I don't use any windows 8+ as a matter of principle, but I would like to advise you, dear author, to bypass these far-fetched restrictions created by m$ solely to control free software and monopolize the market.

More crudely invade the registry and make up instructions for people who don't understand. And maybe even a separate little program that did this "by crude method" of such work. :P

ps
thank you for not giving up windows XP and 7.

After almost going insane, trying to find a nice way to switch all the extension from XnView classic to XnView MP (in windows 10, seriously, how incredibly stupid is the standard tool for this??) I did find this tool:

https://defaultprogramseditor.com/

which I'm not associated with or involved in or anything (plus, it's free).

It pretty much does what the 'set file associations' button should be doing form within XnView (if M$ hand't broken that feature), i.e.: you can just select XnView MP from a list of programs, it shows all the filetypes XnView MP says it can handle, you select all and say, "associate!" and voila, you're golden.

Maybe it'll help others who come across this issue...

/Cheers
