thumbnail problem in browser

Post by tomscom »

after updating to 1.90.2 i'm having problems with thumbnails appearing
only as jpg.icons rather than a thumbnail image. i'm unable to open them & get no error messages. rt.clicking i can look at the properties & the image "properties" are correct. but i can't open & view?? within any given folder i have 1-5% of the thumbnails like this.(that may be as many as 15-20 images).
using PaintShopPro i can navigate to the same folder & see the thumbnail image & open it up. this happened a few years ago after another update.
(i remember pierre having me check some setting which helped)
i've tried uninstalling & did a clean install w/ the same result.

(another problem is that XnView keeps crashing after cropping or resizing.)
would appreciate any help.
thankyou,
tom :?

I assume you're running on Windows XP. Your file type associations for JPEG might be broken.

I don't know about your specific problem, if it's not the shimgvw issue, but one of the quick ways to fix a lot of upgrade problems is to just delete your xnview.ini and cache folder to reset everything. (Back them up in case you want them back.) There might be a way to sort it out without going there, but since it only takes a few minutes to reconfigure, it's not always worth troubleshooting an ephermal problem.

If it still occurs after that, you'll probably want to send a sample file or two to Pierre for analysis.

Let's go back to square one.
There are a couple of things we need to know so we can help you:
  1. What version of Windows do you use?
  2. What version of XnView do you use?
  3. Did you download & run the ImgEditor utility to repair the image file type associations on your system?
