read files order ? from folder

Post by Alex303 » Tue Jan 31, 2012 10:42 pm

hello.

is there any option, button, so that the reading, the scrolling of images, is in the same order as the files in the folder??

the folder has recent images, etc... when i click i want to see the same order ( recent files ) than the files .

Thank you

In the Browser, there's a Sort by... option, but moving from image to image in Viewer and Full-screen, which includes Quick Slideshow, the only options I could find for direction of displayed images were Backward, Forward and Random. Which seems a bit strange, because I believe there is a preference with which you can have XnView 'read ahead' by one image.

I suppose Pierre would have to "hardwire" Open in Browser on Startup to facilitate single-image views with the same kind of Sort options as are available in the browser.

Sorry this wasn't more helpful.

I was trying to find the answer to this also. I searched the forum and found this.
The folder shows the images in one order and the full screen viewer clicks through them in a different order. They would not have to match necessarily but it would be nice to be able to control the order you see them when you click to see the next full view image. It's really essential when scrolling through step by step screen shots or when comparing two images in detail and you want to click back and forth with one click and your eyes fixed on the monitor. But the full screen ordering seems to have a mind of its own. Any workarounds? Otherwise a great viewer!

Hi xnview, (France, you are 8hours ahead)
Your question got me to look and discover the problem. Thanks for that. It is probably things you heard of before.

Two issues, one is primarily my silly mistake. I use xnview as my default viewer for windows so I see the images arranged in explorer, click one into large view, and expect the next one in the viewer to follow the order in windows. I see it can differ because xnview is not my operating system default file manager. An oversight by myself. Case closed unless you have a default file manager version :)

The second issue. Knowing what I just mentioned, now I try to arrange the images in xnview browser before going into large view.
Example: 15 screenshots of VirtualBox Menu Settings

As I titled them explorer shows;

VBox-W7-Settings-1-System-Motherboard.png
VBox-W7-Settings-2-System-Processor.png .... keeps going in sequence to #10
~
VBox-W7-Settings-10-USB.png
VBox-W7-Settings-11-Shared-Folder-Paths.png ....keeps going to #15

In xnview we see it this way;

VBox-W7-Settings-10-USB.png
VBox-W7-Settings-11-Shared-Folder-Paths.png ....keeps going to #15
~
VBox-W7-Settings-1-System-Motherboard.png
VBox-W7-Settings-2-System-Processor.png .... keeps going in sequence to #10

I habitually put dash marks or underscores in all title's spaces for future computing paths to function correctly. Obviously I neglected to note that the dash mark (-) is always ordered after a digit. And that is probably common programmer's knowledge I did not know and I should start names with 10 and not 1. No easy fix except to renumber by shots here and in the future. Unless I don't see something.

thank you for reading.

Do you use Sort by>Name (numeric)?
Pierre.

I leave everything in file-name sorting. Then if I want them in a new order I change it but then try to remember to change the sorting back to file-name because I probably would not remember.

Here is a typical example: I shoot my Nikon camera set at collecting double captures in both "Basic Jpg + Raw". Then when I want to browse one set I sort the images by file-type. Raw (NEF) together and Jpg together, go to the first Jpg, click it into large view and click through the images.

The Nikon ViewNX viewer bypasses this by recognizing the pairs and showing the Jpg only for viewing. Problem is, the Nikon viewer is only good for that and Tiff files. I archive in PNG. I save final edited shots in that and append the EXIF data onto my PNG manually. That EXIF data is read by your Multi-Platform version but not the Windows version. None of these show up in the Nikon viewer that comes with my camera. Thus I often use yours. I've used a few other viewers for both Windows and Linux, yours has better features plus renders all the image types more truthfully. I just have to remember start in your viewer.

I've given up trying to remember what each one is called; too often I get the "names" wrong anyway. It's like when referring to USB hubs: which is "bus-powered" and which is "self-powered"? (Should there even be a "bus-powered" nowadays anyway?). But I've noticed XnView sorts almost identically to Linux and Mac OS X while Windows sorts in something I think they call "natural sort order," which isn't but be that as it may....

I personally prefer XnView's default sort order to Windows'. Given the choice between Windows 7 Explorer windows in an Icon view, IrfanView's Thumbnails and XnView's Browser, for sorting, I'll go with XnView every chance I get. :)

And so far as getting XnView to sort the way Windows does, I say "Don't touch it." Invoking an old cliche too often ignored in desktop computing, I add "If it works, don't fix it."

(OT):The one thing that should be fixed, and not likely it's a change we'll ever see, is XnView MP, when launched, starting in Browser mode. I'm already in Linux when I use it; therefore, the above sorting difference doesn't exist. My picture folders are too replete with JPEGs and my GNOME Nautilus too slow to read the data (especially on file shares) that when I choose to launch XnView MP from "Applications>Graphics," I'd prefer to see an empty window with menus across the top than a Browser window of my Pictures folder.
