Some needed ACDsee features

Post by phaolo » Wed Dec 30, 2015 12:42 am

Hello,
I'd like to replace an ancient ACDsee with XnviewMP.

Can you tell me, however, if these features are possible or if they'll be added in the future?
- full row select --> disable (I'd like to select multiple files with the mouse).
- batch convert --> allow customization of the fast "Convert into" menu.
- batch rename --> ACDsee speeds up a lot the process by preparing the template: it adds the selected file name, replaces last numbers with #, sets the step to the detected number.
- some basic editing --> ACDsee offers various useful options. Can you add at least a visual "crop" and "resize" (pixels, percent, preserve aspect)?

That's it for now :P

enable 'create new name template'

you have already visual crop

I've created an example in explorer. Check the attached image.

Yes, I would like to be able to select the formats I use the most and exclude the others.

I don't have the program on this new computer: will that template load every time, so I'll be able to auto-number a group of files with a few clicks? I use that function a lot!

Uh, maybe I missed it then
Will you add the resize too?

Thank you for the replies.

In XnView, when Files are displayed as "Thumbnails" there is no space between them resulting in move action instead of selecting multiple files.
When viewed as "Details" the whole row is selected resulting in same behavior. If there was a little space left of the filename it would be possible to initiate a selection.

I think you are speaking about the XnView Shell Extension, where it is not possible to freely select the file formats for "convert to".
In XnView itself using the batch convert dialog you can select every file format.
In the windows explorer you could use the "Convert..." function of the XnView Shell Extension to select a file format which isn't on the quick list. It would be 2 clicks more.

I think phaolo wants some intelligence/awareness to the batch rename function.
If you select "file001.bmp, file002.bmp, file003.bmp" the name template should automatically fill in the actual name scheme "file###.<ext>"
If you have "file004.bmp, file006.bmp, file008.bmp" it should detect there is a step 2 increment instead of 1 and set the start and step options accordingly.
Don't know if this is useful, I'm not working with this function in XnView (for batch renaming using a special file rename like antrenamer or KuKnet FileRenamer).

Open a image in XnView that it is displayed in a Viewer tab and not only in the browser tab.
You can drag a selection marquee with your left mouse button
Right click in the selection and you can set the aspect of the selection, or crop the image to the selection, etc. etc.
Click the image menu (or shift+s), there you can resize the image (percent, pixel, aspect, dpi, etc. etc.)

Correct, even if, in the Details view, the option shown in my previous image is a bit better.
The files are moved only if you "grab" them from the filename column, otherwise they just get selected.

Ok, but why not simply offer a way to edit the quicklist?
Anyway, this is a minor problem overall.

Correct again, even if the example isn't perfect. I often have to number files with random names.

For example in Acdsee I just rename the first file, then I select a group and auto-number all in one click:
"DCIM-0011.png","DCIM-0938.png","8339585.bmp","weirdname.gif"
-->
italy img 01.png, italy img 02.png, italy img 03.bmp, italy img 04.gif
(p.s: the extensions are maintained too)

I use renaming programs too (BRU), but for images it's better to be able to see a preview on the fly.

Ok, thanks.
Anyway, these features should be accessible by icons\menus too, otherwise they're basically hidden.

Hello, I've checked again Xnview, and I noticed that it has improved!
"Full row select" can now be disabled, editing is more accessible, batch rename seems to have more options.
Thank you! :D

However, there are still some problems:

- the program has issues with unicode characters (russian, japanese, etc..). It cannot read images with such alphabets! (it detects them as folders??)

- I use fullscreen with "No fit" to check the original image sizes. The problem is that it always opens the pictures aligned in the center.
Can you add an option to position it at the top by default? (e.g: at people's face, instead of crotch lol)

- batch rename: can you please add an autonumbering template that replaces existing numbers with ##? Something like <filename autonumber> so that the template for "image_012" becomes "image_###"
automatically.
