Important: Place the plug-in in "\Program Files\XnView\PlugIns" folder!
Previewing and displaying even more file formats (HTML, EML, ...) in XnView - this plug-in is really cool!

Thank you very much for this update. If I get you right:

The HTML and SWF plug-ins are
- programmed by you
- available for free for all XnView users
- still under development, especially the SWF plug-in has beta level

Are my statements correct?

Does the HTML plug-in support Cascading Stylesheets (CSS)? Are there known limitations at the moment (e.g. tables, margins, ...)?

Indeed. And under GPL.

HTML plugin is only thin layer between XnView and Microsoft Windows Shell HTML Thumbnailer. It uses the same mechanism as thumbnail view mode of Windows Explorer (right side panel) in Win2K and WinXP-pre-SP1.

Looks as if this feature is interesting for other people (companies?), too...

O.k., that's indeed a limitation: The HTML plug-in will work on Windows 2000 and XP, only.

XHTML PLUGIN v1.0.0.2

Post by SeaMaiden »

While the code to write this plugin may have been based on Windows 2000/XP, you do not necessarily have to have Windows 2000/XP to use it.

This plugin also works in Windows Me.

That's good news! At least it works with Internet Explorer 6 SP1 in Windows Me, not sure if it'll work in IE 5.5 or not. Next time I reinstall Me or reformat my hard drive, I'll let you know. I will also test this nice XHTML plugin on Windows 98SE and Windows 95a to see if it will function with them as well.

Not everyone can afford to upgrade to XP yet, especially due to the hardware difficulties involved with it and the money needed to buy new/used XP-compatible hardware if existing hardware isn't compatible.

Thank you DreamWriter for testing this and posting here. Sure enough we are curious what the outcome on Windows 98 and Windows 95a is.

Additonally I'll get back to Nikolay and will ask him, whether he sees problems on these platforms and if so what the possible problems are. Answer will be posted here...

Xtml Plugin Testing Update

Post by SeaMaiden »

I'm not finished testing yet, but results will be posted in the next few days.

In the meantime, here is a list of things I discovered in the preliminary phase of testing that can interfere with the preview functions of XnView, including those of regular graphic files as well as the files affected by the Xhtml plugin. A lof of these are common sense.

Factors that can cause the Xhtml plugin (and previewing/refreshing other thumbnails in XnView) to work slower than normal, or to bog down (or crash) your system:

1. Limited system memory
2. Slow processor
3. Minimal free hard drive space
4. Video card with limited video RAM
5. One or more memory-intensive/graphic-intensive apps are open simultaneously with XnView (i.e., Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office, Norton SystemWorks, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Windows Movie Maker, PowerDVD) or many processes are running in the background:
- Listening to an audio CD or trying to watch a DVD
- Running an antivirus/spyware scan
- Creating PDF files in Adobe Acrobat (If Microsoft Office is open in addition, this can cause Windows to crash)
6. Adobe 8bf filters are also open in another instance of XnView or in another graphics application such as Microsoft PhotoDraw, Adobe PhotoDeluxe, or Adobe Photoshop (this can cause XnView, the other graphics application, and/or Windows to crash)
7. Previewing a folder with many files/pictures
8. Previewing sounds/video at the same time you're previewing pics/html in XnView
9. Browsing/downloading from the Internet while browsing in XnView (very bad with a dial-up connection, not as bad with DSL/broadband)
10. XnView option "high quality for thumbnail" is checked
11. XnView option "keep one image in cache" is checked
12. XnView option "high zoom quality" is checked

** The XnView Version being tested is 1.70.4 **

Please feel free to add to this list. The compression setting for JPEG might also affect this, but I'm not yet sure which level to use for compression that has (1) best quality, (2) smallest file size, and (3) the best of both worlds.

Xhtml Plugin Testing

Post by SeaMaiden »

Sorry it took me so long to respond.
(1) My hard drive was accidentally erased during a backup procedure, and I lost years of data. Some can never be replaced.
(2) My mainboard died, and I am using a loaner with a much slower processor.
(3) I'm still reinstalling updates and downloading some of the stuff I lost.
(4) There is no time to start the plugin tests from scratch. No detailed report.
(5) It took me a while to find the URL for this forum again and to remember my user name and password.

In summary, the Xhtml plugin WILL work to some degree with Windows 95a, 98SE, and Me.
