Win 9x and 1.95.4 - 'Open with' goes to full screen

Doing a fresh install of XnView 1.95.4 in Windows ME. In My Pictures, (or any other folder, for that matter), a right click on an image to Open With XnView sends it to a full screen, and it acts like a slideshow, going from image to image at approximately 4 or 5 seconds. A double left click exits okay with no crashes.

The Send To command works just fine. :?

And apparently toolbar customizations aren't saved in the .ini file. I dropped the .ini I'd saved from where XnView previously worked fine into the Program Files>XnView folder, but nothing seems to be reading from it. That's why I've tried a fresh install of XnView. Have deleted the folder in My Programs and all references with a registry cleaner.

The link provided by Pierre will help.

@Irving:
This problem is supposed to be solved in 1.95 (and even before). So currently it's unclear why the problem persists. Have you installed any other graphic tool before installing XnView (e.g. IrfanView, ACDSee, ...)?

Well 1.95 doesn't exactly fix the faulty registry value (It's actually Windows that writes it in the first place) it just prevents Windows from writing the wrong value in the applications registry key. So if the "bug occured" with older XnView version the problem remains until the faulty registry value is fixed.

Maybe Pierre should fix the applications registry value when installing in the next couple versions to work out the problem.

I'm glad you brought that up because I had pretty much the same problem with 1.31 and 1.74, though with those two XnView would open but not show the image. Maybe after several uninstalls and eliminations of XNView from the registry an install would finally take. I never could reproduce the bug.

Pierre and Helmut, I''ve got the link bookmarked and will read it again, though I don't think it exactly pertains to my situation. The thing is, I have had fits getting even 1.31 or 1.74 to view properly after a fresh install, and finally when I had it working right I took a chance on a newer version by just installing on top of the existing version. I went from 1.74 to 1.94.2 to 1.95.2 to 1.95.3 to 1.95.4 with no problems after 1.74 worked okay.

Now I'm doing a complete reinstall of Windows and all my favorite programs, (and before the registry gets knotted up over time as it typically does I want to clone the hard drive).

I have installed Irfanview and Arcsoft Photostudio 5.5 first, simply because they're problem free, and in the case of Irfanview I can drop the old .ini file into the folder and I'm in business. (Photostudio doesn't have much at all in the way of customization).

Thanks to all for the responses.

Success!

Per Pierre’s link, I did the registry fix (removed the “- slide” part). Now “Open With” works normally.

The bug remains, however, as that registry value was/is written during an install of 1.95.4.

By the way, when it was said that I put off installing XnView because of the problems, I meant no disrespect or intended it to sound like the other programs were “better”. On the contrary, I instinctively click on XnView perhaps 95 percent of the time as compared to any other program.

Thanks to all… :D

Just write the correct command in the applications key (HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\xnview.exe\shell\open\command).

Other option would be writing value with name NoOpenWith in the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\xnview.exe key, but I don't think this is aood idea. All the users having this problem are using open with feature in one way or the other.

MSDN has very limited info about Applications key, but it is briefly mentioned in this article.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc144148.aspx

Unfortunately even fixing applications key doesn't fix any associations users may have created with the Open With dialog.
