Error on renaming files then generating thumbnails

Post by loth » Sat Aug 27, 2005 7:39 am

hi,

in browser-mode, try to browse into a folder with a lot of pics in it and which is not in the cache. (so building the thumbs takes longer, because time this is needed for this testcase)

as the thumbs are generated,
press STRG-A to select all files
press F2 to rename all the files
try a template like "test_<Filename>", and
press rename

i'm getting an error with renaming files after a short moment.

Strange, i have tried on a folder with 1200 pictures, and no big delay, no error.

hmm.. maybe you've got a very fast harddrive? ;-)

i just reproduced that. and the error-box showed me "error renaming the file"
there are png, jpg, gif and tif files inside the folder.
985 files at all, and 55 directories.

anybody else gets this error-box?

I've tried to reproduce the problem but it also works o.k. for me. I've tried with 5000 small JPG files.

Could you please try whether you can reproduce the problem with a smaller number of files (e.g. you could gradually halfen the number of files).

Which Windows version do you use (XP, 2000, ...)?

see my sig. (which i updated and which is unfortunately now under every post with the new data. i thought the new sig is only under the new posts...but this is OT and not neccesary anyway )

i can reproduce that with the newes version of xnview 1.80.2.
also with half of the files or with no folders selected.

if i select not ALL, but some of the files, renaming works for me.

but the error is reproducable for me.

Oops, yes.

This is how the signature is supposed to work. Often handy, but one has to keep this "behaviour" in mind when talking about bugs and versions.

Perhaps a timing issue, perhaps name clashes (which are checked beforehand by XnView and which should not occur).
Could you resize all your image files to let's say 50x50 pixel by using multi conversion and outputting them in a new folder. Then please try whether the problem still occurs with the small image files. If so, it would be good if you could pack all the files and send these to Pierre.
Hope this is feasible for you and helps to find the problem...

Note:
Something we should keep in mind is the "Delayed writing" which is used by Windows XP for all hard disk drives. Delayed writing should be transparent to applications, but who knows...

You have to use the "Multi convert", not the "Sequence convert", see FAQ "How to convert several images at once?" for details.

ok, thanks for the tips for converting. that worked fine.

the result:

with 2641 files (50x50px each) and selecting all of them via strg-a, while the thumbs are beeing generated, i had no problem with renaming them.

so you're right, but the problem still keeps the same, because none of my pictures are 50x50px small :-)

so what can we do about that?
