Anyone know of a basic version of ghostscript available for download anywhere? One that isn't 13 friggin megs in size?

Not exactly what you are looking for... but I have used an old version for quite a long time (example: v6.0 is less than 5MB). This might be OK (I don't know what actually changed... ).

Assuming there aren't compatability issues trying to use an older ghostscript with newer progs (like xnview), that would do. It's still larger than it should be (most freeware PDF viewers are no more than 2 megs), but infinitely better than 13 megs.

btw Is there any significant difference between AFPL and GPL ghostscript? If so, which is the better choice (I mainly want it for use with xnview)?

Edit: Interesting.. For the most part, it progressively grew larger with each successive release. At 8.14, it actually went down in size, but the next release (8.5) made a huge jump to almost 13megs, which was nearly double the size of the previous version (only 7.3 megs).

Well, I just installed APFL v6, but xnview doesn't see it. Is there some way I can tell xnview where it is?

Edit: Well, I copied the gsdll32.dll file into xnview's directory and it stopped saying "ghostscript not found", but now it says "format of file <....> could not be determined. It even gives that message when opening PDFs created by xnview.

Well, I got version 8.14 installed (only 7 megs), and everything seems to work. (Although some PDFs have a big white background behind the page. I don't know what's causing it, nor whether it's a GS or XNV issue.)

Look at this topic (maybe some registry info is useful):

If you want to edit the text installation files, a large install can chopped down a few megs in size. It is a lot of work though, then the registry information is needed...

The problem with the size is downloading it, grabbing 13megs on dialup is not fun.

I think the problem with GS 6.0 is that it's too old. GSview wouldn't recognize it either (GSview did say something to the effect of requiring ver 7.07-9.99 in it's error message).

That must be it. The 7.0 installer works for me while 6.5 one doesn't.
