Home PC

:) Hello !

• I've used the ZIP version, so, ß-2.

• I've a home PC only, and it's naturally pretty protected enough
(router with a hardware firewall, ZoneAlarm, Avira as A.V. guard, SpyBot resident etc.)…

- So, I'm quite able to decide by myself which security level I want for…NEVER THAT ! Image

- I like the XnView approach that allows to place the config. files were you wish…

I wrote
- It has been later, and I've this rathole too… Here :
E:\Documents and Settings\CLAUDE\Application Data\IcoFX\
- Such a path sucks a lot… I'd to set a button in Total Commander to reach it easily !
- It does the trick better for me, no need to set a LNK. I work in TC the most,
not on the Win Desktop or with the Win ExploDer.

• About the issue you have :
- I can't reproduce it here, even switching very quickly Explorer <–> Drawing view…
- BTW : I can't get the articles of your two bottom links «Impossible to display the page» for both…
Maybe this Google stuff is black-listed @ home ? :P

Nice and evolutive

:) Hello !

• Paul-Ouistiti friend and I gave it a try, and indeed made a French language-file…
- The translation of the Help is on the way too.

• That soft has some strong points, in which unique features could be annoying also
(i.e. the auto-reduction of the colour-depth, causing that produced icons
are no longer recognized in XnView and other viewers…).

• Fortunately, the Author has good ears ! Image
He cares really about remarks, bug reports and suggestions, and very quickly!

- Thank you for that great link !

Glad you like it, Clo. :)

I just found out about the new release (1.31 of 13/Dec/2007). The version I had tested was v1.2.

Right, one should only “PNG-compress 256x256 images when saving as .ICO/.CUR” if compatibility is less of a concern.

- Languages lacunaæ fixed too, and addition of the 24² icon format for the tool-bars

All good, to be continued… :D

Thanks for the heads-up, Clo!

Unfortunately this version introduces a new bug which pretty much renders the program unusable on Windows 2000: The menu bar is all black!
  • Image
Also: Once the window has been maximized, the restore button won't work anymore. :|

Link to Author

:) Hello !

• Thanks to report that, I'll give the link to the Author a.s.a.p.

• Paul and I tested under XP only, but we had minor issues too on the menu-bar (too dark titles)
and before some hitch with the menus themselves (font¦writing)…
- Indeed, we have fixed test versions, but I guess it's reasonable to wait for an official 1.41,
it might come not too late… with a lot of additions and fixes.

Cause found !

:) Hello !

Balázs Szalkai, the Author, answered to me via e-mail, and he tells :

«I read a M$ article about system colors and noticed that COLOR_MENUBAR is not supported on Windows 2000.
I will check the Windows version when querying the system color.»

• Hence, that defect might disappear in the next version.
- Aside, I thought that Win is not a clever OS, since in such a case,
it doesn't switch to the default¦current system stuff and colours… :|

Dammit, I knew I ran into this issue before on several occasions: The first time when I did some research on XnView's “Use XP style menus” & “Use default tab control” settings, and then again as I was trying to find out whether there's a connection between the color of XnView's tabs & splitter buttons and the user-controllable Windows color scheme.

About menus…

Post by Clo »

 XnTriq

:) Hello !

• This kind of trouble occurs often with programmes written in recent Delphi™ (v. 7 and >), while on one hand,
the authors don't use separate classic configurable menu files (like hardly discussed around THIS MESSAGE ;) ),
and on the other hand, write owner-controls which don't call really the colour pattern of the current theme…
- For instance, we saw that recently in the good text-editor PlainEdit. But even fixed, we get always a part
of the menu bar as grey, and the rest (without menus) as the colour of the theme…:|
- In that editor, the menus themselves have the theme settings (colour, font), but in others,
the menus stay grey with a black font, that I think is rather depressing :|

• We have less problems in the same painting with XnView (C++), and i.e. the XP-style menus worked quite fine for me
under Win 98 SE, while I used a Win 9x custom theme - that I use still under XP-Pro…

• Back to GFIE Pro : The Author annouced to us a future great feature which is on the workbench …Try to guess ! :P

I appreciate your explanations, Clo. Being a non-programmer, I sometimes find it difficult to follow certain kinds of discussions.

I just realized that you and Paul made the French language file for PlainEdit. I've actually been watching that program's “evolution” for little more than a year now.
BTW: You reminded me of a suggestion I forgot to post.

Hm, it's not support for animated cursors by any chance?

A section and…

:) Hello !

• Thank you, I try to make the things clearer when I can…
…Being a non-programmer, I sometimes find it difficult to follow certain kinds of discussions. …
• I'm not a programmer either, even if I learnt the very basic knowledges ages ago…
- I guess that a section like "Advanced technical issues¦Suggestions" should be welcome in that forum…
…Hm, it's not support for animated cursors by any chance?
• Who knows ? Image
- Anyway, the disastrous support of *.ANI in XnView isn't new : I already reported that years ago (via e-mail)
before than the forum exists…

• Stay tuned, I guess that the new version of GFIE is coming soon… ;)

An Icon editor that does not support the icon library file format (icl) is in no way 'professional'. Now let's see how quickly this negative post will be deleted from this forum - like my other one before. It seems not to be allowed to have different views here, although I clearly explained what did not work and what I did not like in that 'fishy' software.

• Hi !

• The ICL creation support is indeed planned… Extracting ICO, CUR, ANI from executables (ICL included) is already supported.
- I don't see why you are so aggressive there (and elsewhere)…
- I'm not a Mod here, you lucky…
