I've just finished the German translation of the XnViewShellExt Version 2.0. When starting the translation translators I had a déjà-vu:

Many strings are used and available in the XnView main program, already. So when translating it's a very good idea to look at the translation of the main program for two reasons:
1.) Keeps the translation of XnView main program and ShellExt consistent
2.) Makes the translation job easier (hopefully )

Below please find some simple hints for the mapping of strings used in the language file to the main program. I assume that you have the header files of the main program at hand, if this is not the case please contact Pierre and ask for them. Please note that some translations do not match 100%, feel free to shorten or change translations if needed.

The translation of the XnView ShellExtension is kept in a language file, which allows for immediate verification of the translation. You can even make a change and right-click on a file to see your edit immediately.

For a final verification of the translation of the two IPTC dialogs I recommend to open the IPTC dialogs of XnView and the shell extension side-by-side.

I hope this mapping and hints help other translators a bit.

Please note that Pierre has added a string just recently - for this reason it's missing in most translations, e.g. German:

Since version 2.0 several strings have been added (current version is v3.1).

In which context is '188=Not detected!' used? Shouldn't this message be a bit more verbose and say something like '<xxx> not detected.' or '<xxx> not detected. Please check <yyy>'?

Non-translatable strings
There seem to be some strings which cannot be translated:
- 'Cancel' in Options dialog
- 'File's icon' in Options dialog
- 'Go to Folder...' (Note: Elipsis should be removed, because action is performed immediately. )
- 'Quality' in PDF options dialog
- 180° (Note: English translation should be changed to 'Rotate 180°' to better conform with the other menu items for rotating)
- 'Choose filename' in dialog for choosing a template file (windows title)

English translation
Some suggestions for the English translation:
167=Rotate 90° right --> Rotate +90° right
168=Rotate 90° left --> Rotate -90° left

The "File's Icon" feature is just reading icon-path info from a user's Registry, so it is sometimes the case that applications installed (e.g. a PDF reader) is Not registering the file-type (and file-type icon) properly or some other interference with the registered file-type in the Windows Registry. I've experienced this too.
