Suggestions for easy rating

Post by redpaprika »

Hi!

For me it would be really great, if the rating of fotos would be more easy and intuitive. For example I really like the way this is done in Pictomio (http://www.pictomio.de/Images/Screensho ... ll_gfx.jpg, http://www.pictomio.de/Images/Screensho ... ll_gfx.jpg). There you have 5 points under the Thumbnails and the Preview. The Number of stars instead of points indicates the rating. If you klick on one of the stars or points, the points from left to the clicked one become stars. Could something like this be integrated in MP?

The other thing are the filters. In Pictomio you can say for example: show all pictures that have a rating 3 or better. In MP I can select more than one rating in Categories with Shift or Ctrl, but only the first is used as filter. And if I want to filter the content of one folder, only one rating can be selected in the filter drop down menu. It would be nice to have something like <,>,= to choose as criteria for the rating filter.

Ok, so same thing, a panel which is shown/hidden with the possibility to assign quickly a rating??

Ok, good idea, but where to put it?? In a submenu of small toolbar??

Yes, GeoSetter has this "clickable lable" for tumbnails in browser, too. Works fine but I don't use it much because I seldomly have a monitor that's big enough to display the thumbs AND a preview that's big enough to do a rating, but on a bigger monitor it's quite nice. Translated to XnView: Imagine multi monitor usage, so on monitor 1 the browser and on monitor 2 full screen view of one pic. You jump between related files by clicking in browser, and want to set the rating just where your mouse already is (hovering over the thumbnail).
In the XnView Wiki, you can improve the user guide / documentation / F1-help for XnView (classic/Windows) and for XnViewMP

All the programs works in this way today. Lr5, Zoner 16, ACDSee Pro 6 - to mention just a few.

How do I see it implemented in XnView MP?

If the mouse is hovering on the thumbnail AND if the thumb is NOT rated/colored show a hollow star / circle like in the example above. Otherwise (of course) show the actual rating / color.

If the mouse is hovering on the Star / Circle (hollow or not) then automatically, instead showing the hint with the file name, metadata etc. (which anyway is displayed when the user hovers the mouse in the other areas of the thumb), show a menu with the possible values for the desired property (rating / color). (Yes, it is a slight improvement over ACDSee's way)

Aside hint: The values of colors should NOT be burned in but to be taken for a list - because we all want to be customizable. :)
The other thing are the filters. In Pictomio you can say for example: show all pictures that have a rating 3 or better. In the filter drop-down menu you have already above the < = and > operators. Just choose one of them.

However in the Categories tree there is a Bug regarding to Rating / Color filtering.

Ok, severe feature limitation.

The program has inside Select Foo from Blah where Images.Rating = %d. Where %d is the placeholder for the ID of the selected rating.

It should have instead:

Select Foo from Blah where Images.Rating in (%s)

Where %s is the comma-separated string with the ID of the selected Ratings by using Ctrl.

The same algorithm should be applied for Colors which seems that as it is now is badly skewed up (IOW if one chooses two Colors by using Ctrl then the program shows nothing even if there are photos in both color groups).

Amazingly (at least for me) the Categories/Keywords seems to work ok.
It would be nice to have something like <,>,= to choose as criteria for the rating filter.

Not needed, imho. If you implement the above then the multiple selection by Ctrl will act as a much more flexible filtering engine.

However you must TELL US this! :)

Nota bene: There are two issues in the message! A proposal and a bug! Read carefully, read twice! :)
