UI options with inconsistent labels
It is a small thing. I am curious.
show play bar
show info
show hidden files & folders
hide scrollbars
hide toolbar
display pan tool
display ratings
display all graphic formats
Why are different words (show, hide, display) used for similar purpose ?
They are set by check/uncheck. Why not using "show" only to make them simpler ?

Hello,
... +1, Right, XnView(MP) menus need to be "standardized"/simplified.

Re: UI options
This is a good curiosity that touches on the subject of wording 'consistency'...I personally prefer the term "display" because it sounds more professional sounding rather than 'show' or 'hide' IMO
So I vote for "Display" - however it would take a lot of work for Pierre to go through the menu's and reword all of these to just a single unilateral word and then Pierre would have to redo the tick/untick for these same name settings so that they maintain there default stances.

Re: UI options with inconsistent labels
Oh, someone has modified my message title. Thank you.
I am sorry if the developer should spend time for changing those items. I just expect XvView option become more intuitive. Small/little consistency here and there, will make XnView simpler for users.
It is nice if users can conclude:
"If there is an option item to make something appear or disappear, then checking it will make something appear".
That is simpler.
Still, I like XnViewMP. It is the only image viewer I have on Xubuntu. I have removed the others (pre-installed ones).
Thank you.

Does it mean you do not like my message ?xnview wrote:So what is better?
I am sorry then.
I thought users' feedback was needed.
Thanks.

??

Re: UI options with inconsistent labels
No ... the request is for the check boxes: "show" or "display" for all - same meaning (so checked or unchecked) :xnview wrote:Ok, so

show pan tool

so in this case:
SHOW: (or DISPLAY) - for me it doesn't matter
-play bar
-info
-hidden files & folders
-scrollbars
-toolbar
-pan tool
-ratings
-all graphic formats

Pierre,
I am sorry. I misinterpreted your question. I thought you were asking which one of those *image-viewers* was better while I had already removed the others.
According to Wordnet ...,
for the same meaning: to make visible,
for the same structure: Something ----s something, ...
the frequency of use of 'to show' is higher than 'to display'.
I vote for "show" for the above reason and for its shorter form.

Re: UI options with inconsistent labels
On second thought I don't mind "show" even though I voted for 'display' - so if "show" was used it would be fine with me.

I once missed the scrollbar since I thought it was "show". Then, I found out why.
When I started questioning about those words, it was not myself on my mind anymore; it was the other users who might face the same issue.
When I use an application I like and then I see an issue, I am always tempted to report since I want it better for the whole users. It is very frequent that old users do not see an issue since they are already accustomed with. However, new users might find it more serious since they have to adjust themselve to a new environment.
I am not a programmer, so reporting the potential issue is the only thing I can. To me, it is not about winning the vote.
So, it is up to the developer what the best choice is.
End of My Report
Thanks.
