Can't Open File
MP version .86 x64 on Windows 7 x64.
Yesterday I downloaded a bunch of jpegs and pngs from google images. They are large images, around 2000x2000.
MP won't open any of these files - about two dozen, although I can view them in any other application without issue.
I can see the thumbnails in browser mode just fine except that their proportions are squished.
Also, when I double click on the image to switch from browser to viewer mode, first I get this error message, and when I click okay, then a *new* instance of MP is started with the selected image in viewer mode - and the viewer mode is empty - no image at all there. If I double-click on the empty area, it switches back to browser mode in the proper directory, but still in the new instance. As you can see, the error message isn't very descriptive.
Summary:
- MP can't handle something about these png and jpg images
- MP won't display them in Viewer Mode - instead, it shows a viewer with no image loaded (empty), even though it really is loaded; it just isn't displayed
- In Browser Mode MP displays the thumbnails which are squished/out-of-proportion
- When MP encounters these images, and you switch from browser to viewr, MP produces an error message. When you click out of the error message, instead of going ahead and switching to viewer mode, it does so in a new instance. And the viewer doesn't display the image.
I have attached two of the images - a jpg and a png which my MP cannot view.

Re: Can't Open File
i have no problem to open or view these files. Do you have a preview in browser?
Pierre.

No; there is no preview tab - all the tabs disappear except the Properties tab. Normally I would see: Preview, Properties, Histogram, EXIF, XMP and ExifTool. But for these I only get Properties. I downloaded about 20 files and only two or three of them are viewable.

Yes, with those two files - that's why I attached them...
Re: Can't Open File
@Brother Gabriel-Marie: Could you please copy The-Universe.jpg & solar-system-lrg.en.png to the root directory of a different partition (preferably an FAT- or FAT32-fomatted USB flash drive), change the the filenames to something like test.jpg & test.png and then try again to open the images?

Pierre, ah - that's a good test.
I am visiting my parents at the moment and won't be back to my desk for a week. When I get back I will be glad to test! Thanks.

Re: Can't Open File
Pierre,
Okay, I tried this. I copied those files to the root of another disk.
I still can't open them. MP does not show their XIF, preview, histogram or anything except file properties - the other side tabs are all missing.

Any clue for this? It is happening a lot.
I can view the file in any program except XnView MP.

Re: Can't Open File
I'm not sure about Pierre, but I for one don't have the slightest idea what's going on. No matter what I try, I just can't reproduce this weird issueBrother Gabriel-Marie wrote:Any clue for this? It is happening a lot.

Could you send me your INI file enclosed in [ code ] tags via PM, if it's not too much to ask? (Please remember to remove all personal info in case you choose to do so.)

Re: Can't Open File
Another problem is this - I had a handful of image files and I renamed them in MP, but I guess MP had issues with one or two of them and didn't rename any of those files. I tried moving them between instances of MP and they dragged and dropped but didn't move.
And this morning, when I started MP it crashed when I changed folders.
It prompted me to send a bug report, and then failed with this: When the files are unreadable, they display funny, too, in MP's browser: Maybe something is screwed up somewhere. This is with version 0.87; but I had the image problem in 0.86, too. I'm just mentioning these other things here in this thread in case there is a link somewhere amoungst the errors.

Re: Can't Open File
Here is another interesting thing:
I'm not exactly sure what order I did things here... I wasn't in "debug mind" at that time.
The first way went by copying from one MP to another MP, with renaming done in MP.
The second way went by copying and renaming the files outside MP. .
The rename and movement in MP caused the messed up files (the stretched ones) that MP can't work with.
The rename and movement outside of MP kept the images from being messed up.
So, there you see the same exact file - one borked and one good.

Re: Can't Open File
Seems like a cache problem to me.
You mentioned that you're using “MP version .86 x64 on Windows 7 x64”. Have you considered updating to v0.87?

Re: Can't Open File
Sorry, I AM using version .87, in fact.
Okay, I'm deleting all the cache. (Settings > Browser > Catalog > Delete all [button])
Okay, I deleted all the cache and the problem remains.
