File in use error

Post by obelisk »

On a network, thumbnail view.
often selecting a file and DEL gives error File in use
The program using the file is XMP.
After the error the thumb of the file disappears anyway, but hte file is still there.

Tried to reproduce this one again, with version 0.93.1.
It may take some DEL's to get the In use message, but it can still be reproduced.

With a network connection from a Windows 10 PC to a Windows 7 laptop, just mapped a drive letter to \\<ip address>\d$ (administrative share).
Last year I tested with a connection to a Windows 2008R2 fileserver share.

What I noticed now is that as soon as the File in use message appears, a thumbs.db file is created in the folder where the test images are being deleted.
I never use tbumbs.db files, and they are never there. The delete process from XnViewMP creates them.
No idea if mentioning this helps, looks like a tough bug to me.

thumbs.db is not from XnView MP, perhaps from windows explorer. Do you use 'recycle bin'?

You mean in settings, General, File operations?
Yes, "Use recycle bin" is enabled.

Your question about the Recycle bin hinted me to do some more testing....
With Recycle bin enabled, the "File is open in XnView MP" message appears.
With Recycle bin not checked, there is no message, just nothing happens (file is not deleted). This only happens one out of five files or so.

I now tested with Shift-Delete also.
Every one out of five times the file is not deleted (without message), like when pressing just Delete and Use recycle bin not checked.

This Recycle bin thing wonders me, since as far as I know, the Recycle bin is not used on network shares.
One more hint perhaps: When I try to delete the thumbs.db on the remote system while the "file in use" message is still on screen on the other PC, I get a message that the file cannot be deleted because it is in use by system. When I close the file in use message from XnViewMP I can delete the thumbs.db file.

Sorry, never answered... the files were average 21 MP prctures, so about 10 MB.
So, a few years later, newer Windows versions, a lot of XnViewMP versions later, I cannot reproduce this problem anymore.
Took 50 picture copies on a network share from/to W10 PC's, pressing Del or Shift-Del on one or several files deleted the files without error =untill all 50 files were gone.
