"Update Catalog From Files" clears the photos categories

Post by t3mujin »

I have some sidecar files that when I run "Update Catalog From Files" it clears the assigned categories that photo already had. those categories were already exported from xnview, but the side had been updated outside xnview.

Sorry, I was away for some days. The assigned categories actually are the on the xmp, the file was generated by running "Update Files From Catalog" and that section of the metadata never was changed.

Same problem here. Even without updating the files from the calalog or vice versa, the check-marks from the categories disappear over time. I have no clue why, and I cannot reproduce. Even more problems:

- after playing around with the "update calalog from file" and the "update file from calalog", some files are now in double or even triplicates in the database.
- when I right click on a file and choose "remove from category", it is still there! I have navigate into another category and back in order finally remove it.
- it is not clear what is meant with "file" in the wording "update database from file": the picture file (JPG etc) or the xmp file?
- although many pictures lost the checkmark in different categories and have no orange mark any more on the thumbnail, they still appear in the acording category.
- after adding a file to a category, the thumbnail gets additional marks "IPTC" and "EXIF". These marks stay forever, even if you remove the files from the categories and even if you remove all IPTC/XMP entries.

After sitting for many, many hours on the categorization of my pics, I finally realized that this function is full of bugs and doesnt work reliably. What a pity, because XNViewMP has the potential of beeing the best and fastest program for categorysation.

Jens

Do you have samples and a way to reproduce these bugs? And which settings do you use?

My metadata settings are attached.
I cannot reproduce the main problem that some pics loose their category checkmark but still stay in the category.

To reproduce the strange behaviour regarding tagging (not sure if this is a bug or a feature; however, a minor issue):

- Select a file which has exif tag only.
- Choose Tools-Metadata-Edit IPTC/XMP
- Without changing anything, choose "write"
- The file is now tagged with "XMP" and "IPTC" (small logos in the thumbnail)
- Furthermore, the file gets 2 more entries in the "info pane": "IPTC-IIM" and "XMP", Both of them are empty.
- you will NEVER get rid of the 2 tags again.
