I am a new user to XnView MP.
I am in the process of scanning thousands of old family photos and want to categorize them (by subjects, locations, year/time, event, etc.) so that once I am done I can sort them and send them to members of my family. I have established my categories and subcategories and have begun to apply those to the pictures that I have scanned in. However, I don't know how to store this categorization/sub-categorization in the Metadata? I also now realize that in many cases, I need captions so that others in the family might understand the significance of the picture (for example, "This picture of Aunt ____ was taken two weeks before she passed away". But those captions don't seem stay in the metadata.
I have spent dozens of hours reading through material and watching tutorials, but none of them address the issue I am facing. It seems to me that the "edit IPTC/XMP" portion of the software doesn't work ... and there is no documentation to support it.
Bottom-line, I am lost as to what to do next ... I cannot figure out how to include my categories and captions in the metadata.
Is there someone who could help or provide some documentation/tutorials that would shed some light on this?

in settings>Metadata, do you have enabled 'export DB category to XMP'?
How do you enter Caption, with IPTC dialog box?
