Customize IPTC User Interface

Post by mmaier »

Not all IPTC-Fields are relevant for our workflow. Is it possible to customize IPTC User Interface in the way to switch off fields?

It would be a very very good feature.

However even if hiding/showing fields on the same tab is quite trivial to implement, rearranging fields in just one (or more) other tab(s) needs a little bit of thinking. But somewhat I feel that it is worth the effort.

Yes, something like that.

But I think that some improvements are easy to do and they will help a lot:

- Auto Correct support in fields. This is critical. Will speedup a lot the entry process.
- upon hiding some iptc items the panel will reflow in order to not leave empty spaces. For example, if I hide 'caption', 'special instructions' and 'keywords' (all big fields) the other items will go up filling that empty space.

yes but on existing dialog (tab based), you can have a lot of space after hiding some fields...

Yes, this is just one reason for which I think that scrolling (one tab) layout is good for customizing fields.

Also, having a tab layout doesn't help very much in (un)hiding fields because even if you hide the fields, the tabs are still there and the user anyway must click on the tabs in order to go to the desired field.

So, if we want to (un)hide fields we need a one-tab/scroll layout

Perhaps another tab named "All/Custom" where all fields to be present by default and let the user to choose what to (un)hide there?

Not mine. :) Photoshop has something rather similar. Also other programs have. Besides that, Ps has the nice thing to "close" (= hide) the entire tabs. It has an "X" quite similar with what XnView does in the main window with the edit(ed) images.

Hello,
I completely agree with utility to improve user interface and thus make it more effective to modify metadata, gathering those that are frequently used in one custom panel.
For example, XnviewW (classical) has the options menu on the main interface, so it is easier not to forgot how to toggle the way to write (or replace) data.
I know it is not easy to create a fully customizable interface: I tried to construct a "folding" proposal to Peter, there are several months.
When I'm at home (I'm away now), I'll try to find my drafts if usefull, and subject still pending.

PS in the same idea, possibility of customized exif meta displaying would be great (between 12 to 20 main)

Kind regards to every one
