On my Ubuntu 16.04 machine, after I physically disconnected my samba share drive, when I tried to run xnview, it would take a couple minutes to start up and then, even after start up, it would essentially be so slow as to be unusable.
I deleted my local copy of Thumb.db and XnView.db, but xnview was still unusable, so I rebooted my machine. After the reboot, xnview worked in a responsive and timely fashion.
You might want to add some handling to detect samba mounts and skip them if they take more than a few seconds to respond.
As it was, it took me the better part of an hour to figure out that the reason XnViewMP was hanging was due to my having disconnected my samba share from the network.
And, in fact, my current XnView picture folder was set to a local path and NOT a samba path, so I'm not sure why XnView was trying to access my samba path in the first place..
