Picasa faces recognition adds XMP metadata :

Code: Select all

 File : lh01.jpg
XMP Toolkit : XMP Core 5.1.2
Region Applied To Dimensions W : 900
Region Applied To Dimensions H : 508
Region Applied To Dimensions Unit: pixel
Region Name : Stan, Oliver
Region Type : Face, Face
Region Area X : 0.261111, 0.615556
Region Area Y : 0.457677, 0.307087
Region Area W : 0.3, 0.295556
Region Area H : 0.639764, 0.614173
Region Area Unit : normalized, normalized
XnViewMP doesn't take care of these metadata ?
Exiftool displays Region name with this parameters (Tools, Open with, Configure, Add, AddOn/Exiftool , parameters = -k "-xmp-mwg-rs:RegionName" )

"People" in categories filter is still empty ...
Which metadata does XnViewMP recognise ?

Test 2
With Microsoft Photo Gallery, XMP metadata are :

Code: Select all

Creator Tool : Microsoft Photo Gallery 16.4.3528.331
Region Rectangle : 0.161111, 0.344488, 0.181111, 0.320866, 0.543333, 0.196850, 0.155556, 0.275591
Region Person Display Name : Stan, Oliver

-Settings : Import XMP subject ... and Import XMP Face tags are ticked
- Update catalog from files

Edit: see next post 2020 12 25

Still no people in XnViewMP 's categories filter for now

It seems working with Microsoft metadata.

But Neither browsing an existing folder nor Update catalog from files can create new people
The only way is to delete / add folder in settings, catalog.

XnViewMP does read RegionPersonDisplayName

Edit:
Maybe "Update catalog from files" works, if people existed in the catalog before
I'll do some other tests ...
EditEdit: It works if people exist.

Edit :
Still not working with Picasa metadata.

When Picasa RegionName is copied into RegionPersonDisplayName it will work.
I must use exiftool -k "-xmp:RegionPersonDisplayName<xmp-mwg-rs:RegionName"

Still not working with Picasa metadata.
With "update catalog from files", XnViewMP V0.98.1 reads the names written by Picasa ( xmp-mwg-rs:RegionName ) : Solved
Maybe "Update catalog from files" works, if people existed in the catalog before
Even if people did not exist before, with "update catalog from files", XnViewMP V0.98.1 will create them in "people" categories filter. : Solved

The only small problem remaining for me is that browsing folders is not sufficient to make XnViewMP refresh these xmp metadata (Maybe only iptc are read when browsing ?)

I'm using Win10 XnView MP Version 0.99.1 64bits (Sep 23 2021) plus Picasa tagged MWG Regions tags. I cannot see any option to display the facetags on the image. What should I be looking for?

Thanks, Paul

First, set the parameters so that XnViewMP reads the "Region name" tags (tools > settings > metadata > import xmp face fields )

Then , If your photos contain the equivalent keywords to the categories (i.e. you have not assigned categories (and stars and labels) without exporting them as embedded metadata) force the re-reading of the folders by deleting / adding them to the table in the tools > settings > catalog... screen. (you can add parent folders, reading is recursive)

Now, faces tags should appear in "Categories filter" pane.
Click on a name and get filtered photos ...

Full managing of face tags is not yet implemented in XnViewMP.
You can't edit these tags, only simple filtering is available.
(except in "edit xmp" window , iptc extensions tab ... but I don't remember which tag can be read / written here)

You can also create a "Tools, Open with ..." function where ExifTool will add a simplified fixed RegionName, not handly

In View mode, "Settings, View, Informations" you can add only IPTC fields, and no xmp ... :|

A good idea for a request : allow displaying there XMP data, especially xmp face tags , because it is not relevant to copy this xmp information into any iptc field.

You can display regions and region names in view mode :
Use "view" menu, > display region names ...

Or create a new button in view mode
Settings > Interface > Tool bar > View mode > ... and add the "show region button" (cmd_show region) ...

but this red text is not very nice

Thank you @michel038 for your two pieces of information. I am now able to view the facetags well.

I agree that the red text doesn't work very well. The boxes are OK though.
XnView.jpg

TagThatPhoto doesn't display names on the photos but uses yellow for current image, green for tagged image and red for untagged face. Yellow works best IMHO.

Adobe Lightroom uses grey and places a background behind the text helps to highlight it. This works quite well.

So I conclude that Yellow boxes work best, with either black text on white background (or white text on black background). But it's subjective. Maybe add colour options to settings?

Is it possible to have the file?
Pierre.
