Hi!
I use Shotwell on Linux for my personal photos
But I have to use Win at work :(
So I have decided to use XnView for my (separate) work photos
I know that XnView is great and available on Linux (arch by the way :D ) but I am going to stick with Shotwell on Linux, because.

I am used to work with thumbnails with just the tags written underneath, and a tree of nested tags on the left pane (In shotwell), with a simple Click+Shift &/or Click+ctrl for selecting files and then ctrl+T to tag them

I used to have that (or something similar) on XnView on Windows (when I tried to use it for both linux and windows in dual boot, long story) but now I have clean reinstalled (via REVO uninstaller) I cant for the life of me remember how to set it up again

I am also very confused about what XnView thinks 'Tagging' is and what 'categories' are, and how to 'write tags to files' - which I normally do)

Can anyone help me, direct me to info on etc?

I am not a photographer, so just use home photos as snaps of life and at work I am a Uni Lecturer / Researcher who uses photos as a media.

If I have made no sense, please let me know how I should clarify myself please :)

Best wishes to all
Leigh

i think that 'tagging' (Shotwell) = 'Categories' (XnView), Tag in XnView is only used internally

As Pierre mentioned, what you want in XnView is “categories”. These are arbitrary tags that you define, and you can browse files with such tags in the Catalog Filter.

Refer to the thread Michel posted…

Category tags can be in either IPTC or XMP format, and they can be saved in the image file, in a sidecar file (non-destructive Adobe style), both, or neither (just retained only in the XnViewMP database). It just depends on the settings you choose.
