When I do a batch convert JPG to JPG in 1.9.8, EXIF thumbnails appear not to be generated, or perhaps are unreadible. They were properly done in prior versions. However, EXIF thumbs are created when manually saving an image.
I've attached my settings, it happens whether XYB is ticked or not, and a sample output jpg.
Symptoms were slow display of thumbs in both explorer and XNView, and I checked using the https://www.dcode.fr/exif-thumbnail website exif thumb viewer

Let me know if there's any problem reproducing.

if i use output jpg with same settings, embedded thumbnail is generated. Which input file do you use?

Ah I see what's happened: Preserve Metadata has become unticked - I must have done that for a quick task!

That does explain it (I think elsewhere I raised the idea that Create Thumbnail should be adhered to when Preserve Metadata is unticked)
