Opening 16 bit tiff files

Post by DGauss »

Hello,

When opening a "16 bit" .tiff in XnView MP I get the message:

"This picture will be converted to RGB with 8bits per component"

I may be understanding incorrectly but I thought XnView MP was able to open "16 bit per component" (48 bit) files?

Thanks,

Mark

Thank you.

To clarify....is this behavior different from XnView ('classic')?
The same message appears in both.

In the XnView Classic/MP "What's different..." thread it says:
"Support for full internal bit depth pictures 8/16/32 bits per component"

But I am not clear what is different (if both are converting to 8-bit?).

Currently it's the same as XnView classic, but in a future version

8/16/32 bits per component reading/writing support

The solution is to load the 48 bit TIFF into Iris and then save it again, as a 48bit TIFF. The image now loads into Capture NX!
Your suggestion resolved a chronic "missing link" in my work flow.

I'm also interested in this. Currently, converting 16bit files into 8bit ones is pointless (at least in my case) since all such images that I open turn out completely black in XnView. It seems that it needs proper 16bit support. Am I missing something?

EDIT: I'm talking about XnView classic, not MP. Sorry.

Keep up the good work! XnView is fantastic otherwise.

Saving at bit depths over 8 bits per channel

Post by darenfit »

I'm currently experiencing banding in saved pictures that looked great at 12bit per channel original NEF files. I use some features of xnViewMP which are not in nConvert or at least not easy for me to recreate (zealous crop).

I'm hopping for 12,14 or 16 bit support but the discusssions over the last few years don't look too promising.

Am I the one one who needs this ? :D

Apparently, NConvert doesn't use 16-bit either - I just tried setting up a .bat file to convert 16-bit PNG and it converts to 8 bits per channel.

nconvert.exe -crop 0 67 720 405 -o %% -clevel 9 *.png

With the advent of programs like Topaz Video Enhance Ai allowing users to upscale their old home movies, the need for 16-bit TIFF and PNG processing will become greater.

XnView must stop converting 16 bit files to 8 bit. This is a serious issue. It should never happen. For years I have been waiting for an update that will fix this extreme disadvantage in an otherwise excellent software. I would donate € 50 when that's done.
