Hello,
I don't know if an other user friendly way exist (an other way than a "expert" sql query ) ... or if a new xnview data base tool is planned to be released to better manage the db???
But, right now, it would be interesting to have a friendly way to clear all blank categories into the xnview db (ex: IPTC keywords not attached to any files but still into db) ... of course, it is already possible to select (or multi select) within the "category filter tab" the blank items (and then, with a right mouse click, and delete) ... but maybe into this same contextual menu, it would be interesting to have a way to automatically select all blank items ? (to have the ability to clear/delete these items in one step).

Re: MP- Add a way to Clear all blank categories-db managemen
Hello,
To be more clear: I especially had this issue, one time, with a (or few) jpg file containing a lot of IPTC keywords (more than ~40, in fact it was a long sentence into the IPTC field), and for me and for the XnView DB file it's a kind of "virus file"/"Stack overflow" ... then, this has put the mess into my xnview DB even after deleting this file (all IPTC entries remain stored into the DB).
... So I think it would be important to have a warning before automatically storing IPTC keywords into DB (or others extra meta data) from a file containing more than 20 keywords/entries ... (more than 20 for example, or a customized number is better), to preserve the integrity and the readability of the user XnView DataBase.

support this, that would be really nice
Re: MP- Add a way to Clear all blank categories-db managemen
Thumbs up if metadata of files in "excluded folders" is not added to the db, or their keywords to the category list
one may have to browse to folders with images that could be full of unneeded metadata (keywords) eg saved from the internet, and those folders could be excluded and the files not affect the db.

I'd support this fully!orbspider wrote:Thumbs up if metadata of files in "excluded folders" is not added to the db, or their keywords to the category list
And I'd add what I did ask some time ago: a way o exclude not only folders, but also file types (i.e. file extensions). My DB is now full of all kinds of MP3, TXT, PDF and whatever files because I did browse folders containing images among other things.
Cheers & best wishes

... Thank you Pierre for the new option into MP0.78: "Categories management"/ "clear all" ... this help to clean the orphan categories (orphans IPTC keywords).

I too wanted to clear all empty categories but with "clear all" all my categories were gone. Is there another why to only clear the empty categories?
