BPG format

Post by raysar »

Hi,
Thank's to developers for xnview and xnviewMP which are very useful.

I see he is adding recently BPG support on xnview.
I'm using OSX and I hope that extend to xnviewMP.
I'm starting to compress many pictures, like screenshot to win quality and size. But I wait for a good image viewer on osx.
Is this feature arriving soon? :)

For readers who did not know BPG image file:

Hi,
BPG are especially powerful for small pictures (or small animated files), but for bigs .jpg pics (20Mpixels and more), I think it's better to use a jpeg compression algorithm (?), for example, jpeg-recompress, see examples here:

All day i see jpeg artifact.

My brain hate JPEG artifacts.
BPG are an amazing alrithm encoding 4Kvideo, jpeg are and 30 years old algorithm build to be fast for slow computer.

Mozjepeg are gread but not enough, especially on sharp picture or text picture.

I hope only a support for software like xnviewmp and browsers :D

... No extra artifacts in this case (with jpegmini or jpeg-compress, etc...)

"...a photo optimization technology that reduces the file size of JPEG photos by up to 5X, while preserving the resolution and quality of the original photos...."

https://github.com/danielgtaylor/jpeg-archive
http://www.jpegmini.com/
"... which significantly reduces the size of photographs without affecting their perceptual quality."

PS: I also hope a support for both (BPG and "jpeg-recompress" technologies) within xnviewmp, nconvert and browsers ;-)
