0.84b1: RAM usage for creating a catalog

Post by masterjp »

I have an archiv of digital photos (round about 60.000 photos) from my digital cameras (5-18 megapixels).
All files are in different directories within one directory. With all versions of xnview mp (0.8x) I have a problem with "out of memory".
XnView MP waste RAM!The memory usage for database setting does not limit the memory usage. My PC has 16 GB RAM and no swap file.

I wanted to add the directory of my photo archive and after minutes the memory usage of xn-view mp is at 10 GB RAM.
After my PC RAM is totally used, the xn-view mp runs "out of memory" and crash.

The whole thumbnails cache is only 400-700 MB.

Why does XnView MP waste so much RAM for creating thumbnails?

I am using the following settings:

Lossy (HighQuality) - WEBP
Width = 192 Pixel
Height = 144 Pixel

Maximal size for cached thumbnails = 2.000 MiB
Memory usage for database = 2.048 MiB
PC: Intel 8700k + Asus Z370-F + 16 GB RAM G.Skill + Asus RTX 3050 OC + Samsung SSD
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit 22H2 |
GFX: XN-View 2.51.5 | XnViewMP 1.6.5 | XnConvert 1.100.1 | Adobe Photoshop Elements 2024 | Elements XXL 11 | Paint.Net

By default, XnViewMP load all thumbnails in RAM. So how many files do you have in the browser?
Do you have tried to disable settings>Thumbnail>Create for whole folder?

I used followings steps:

Menue Tools => Settings => catalog (on the left side) => add folder ...
PC: Intel 8700k + Asus Z370-F + 16 GB RAM G.Skill + Asus RTX 3050 OC + Samsung SSD

Oh ok, are there only picture files in your folders (no videos, PDF, ...)?

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 0.84 beta 3. Could you please try and confirm the bug fix, masterjp?

The thumbnail creating button in settings menue let XnView MP directly crash if I want to generate thumbnails of my big picture folders. :-(
XnView MP 0.83 does not crash in my comparison.
