Companion File Handing in MP?

Post by andrewj »

Hi,
Could someone please confirm whether MP has the ability to set up equivalent companion file handing to XnView Classic and if so how to access it. In Classic, there's a simple .INI section which implements exactly what I need, for example to move XMP and Canon/Panasonic/Sony Raw files with the JPG, I just set:

Code: Select all

[File]
Companion_00=cr2:jpg
Companion_01=cr2:cr2.bib
Companion_02=crw:jpg
Companion_03=crw:crw.bib
Companion_04=cr2:xmp
Companion_05=cr2:dng
Companion_06=cr2:cr2.xmp
Companion_07=rw2:xmp
Companion_08=rw2:jpg
Companion_09=rw2:rw2.xmp
Companion_10=arw:xmp
Companion_11=arw:jpg
Companion_12=arw:arw.xmp
ConfirmFileDelete=1
CopyCompanionFile=1
However, this doesn't seem to work in the XnViewMP .INI file.

What's the status of this, please?
Thanks
Andrew

Any plans for this soon? It's the single most annoying thing about MP.
I can't do any file deletion with MP. LR is the only thing that works and you can't open 2 catalogs.

I would like to second the wish of having the possibility to move/copy/rename/delete companion or better sidecar files with the corresponding image files. Is there a timeline when this will be implemented (http://www.xnview.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=288)?

Regards,
hic

Salut Pierre,
Merci for XnView & for this fix, excellent feature, glad to see it.
But - does not work for me with XnView MP 0.91.
Here my context & issue:
I have .CR2 as RAW, and I store as RAW+JPG, and I have some ON1 meta data files
When I uncheck "show companion files", [*.ON1] are correctly hidden, but [*.JPG] still show up.
In order to reduce the problem I've completely emptied the default extension list of and tried two set up:
First, "cr2" as "Master Extension", and "on1" as "Extension", "show companion files" unchecked: in this case, [*.ON1] are hidden.
Then, "cr2" as "Master Extension", and "jpg" as "Extension", "show companion files" unchecked: in this case, [*.JPG] are shown.
Merci!

Hi Pierre,
Thanks for what you have done so far. However I'm sorry, but there are a lot of bugs in this implementation. It might have been easier for you to copy what you had working so well in XnView.

Here's what I have found so far:
  • Companion file handling does not work with drag/drop move or copy, only if you choose copy/cut and paste from the menu
  • The system doesn't really work with the default rules, and there's no easy way to delete them. I had to delete the whole "list" section from the INI file and then add in explicit rules for each RAW filetype
  • If you delete the raw file then the display doesn't update correctly - the raw file disappears, but the JPG and XMP re still visible until you refresh the file list
Thanks
Andrew

But it's the same...
  • Companion file handling does not work with drag/drop move or copy, only if you choose copy/cut and paste from the menu
Here it works, which rules do you have? Which extension do you drop/drop?
[*]The system doesn't really work with the default rules, and there's no easy way to delete them. I had to delete the whole "list" section from the INI file and then add in explicit rules for each RAW filetype
you have the context menu to remove a rule
[*]If you delete the raw file then the display doesn't update correctly - the raw file disappears, but the JPG and XMP re still visible until you refresh the file list[/list]
The JPG/XMP are deleted, it's only a refresh problem, right?

Hi Pierre,

Drag and drop definitely doesn't work for me, if I drag the raw file. It works fine in XnView.

My rules are as follows:
cr2 -> xmp;jpg
crw -> xmp;jpg
arw -> xmp;jpg
rw2 -> xmp;jpg

There's no context menu for me in the settings dialog, files tab. Are you setting the rules somewhere else?

Re the last point, yes it's a refresh problem. The correct files are actually deleted.

Thanks

It works for me, do you hide companion files?

Hi Pierre,
Definitely no context menu for me. I have tried both left and right clicking in both columns...
I show companion files - I run with all three boxes checked.
