Allow to view and edit images while continuing to import files in background

How would I cause the program to import in the background, allowing me to view and edit files while the import is in progress?

PhotoMechanic does this very well. It first creates thumbnails and medium thumbnails of all pictures in an import and then imports the large files. As it does this, the user is able to edit and view the thumbnails/full size pictures as the import takes place.

Is this possible?
