Quick Search : add new settings

Post by michel038 »

I suggest adding new functions in quick search.
This tool is very convenient (we only have to type some letters, and the result comes up instantly ! )

- Add : Recursive search option

- Add : Search in categories.

EDIT 2020 May
This one would give the same result than " Search, Category, Contains "
I thnk it will be difficult to implement : first, look for categories containing (word). Category1, category2, category3 ... are found ;
Then build a search : search for photos matching category1 or category2 or category3 ...

So this search will be as user friendly and powerwul as the Picasa search ...

+1

Or maybe allow a Quick Search setting to be saved as custom filter or so?

'quick search' search in current items list, it doesn't search for a filename (like Search dialog)

Quick search can find any text in IPTC metadata of the photos showed in the current folder...

For recursive search, there is a workaround : enable recursive view.
But you have to wait until the whole browser content is browsed before you can enter your search (and your coffee gets cold)

For categories, there is also a Workaround : all my categories are already copied in XMP keywords and IPTC Keywords

Thus, when "Michel038" searches for a specific information or a category, he finds it instantly ...

Maybe a new feature would be useful for "normal users" , by using database information to improve quick search performance ?

Edit: For French users
Pour la "Recherche rapide", je viens d'ajouter le chapitre 11X dans ma doc :
https://orchisere.pagesperso-orange.fr/ ... mp.htm#11X
it doesn't search for a filename (like Search dialog)
but quick serach does find filenames ... :D

Could you please explain this point for non-tech guy like me? I don't understand what XMP and IPTC keywords are, and how to deal with them.

When you use "Categories" tool to tag a jpg photo as "friend" , xnviewmp writes a record in it's own database (=catalog).
If some settings were enabled, this word ("friend") becomes a keyword written inside the photo.
Settings, Metadata, Export DB categories, create xmp or create iptc.

Iptc is a standard method for writing captions, titles, keywords ... inside jpg photos. Most features in xnviewmp can use iptc data (i.e. quick search)
xmp is an alternative, newer and more adaptable method, but some features in xnviewmp can't read xmp metadata.

So I have enabled both IPTC and XMP, and all categories i used are stored in photos.
If xnviewmp crashes, or if i use another software in the future, I won't loose my work.

I also added captions, titles, copyrigt, city, country, ... in some photos with "edit iptc/xmp" window (option : iptc + update xmp)

If you have a lot of categorized photos where none of these export method were enabled, you can update them, following these steps :
(do a first try on a small set of test photos)
-enable settings create iptc, create xmp
-select photos
-View, Update files from catalog
-unselect
-select a photo, see XMP and IPTC tabs in information panel ...
-now, quick search will be able to find categories=keywords in IPTC metadata
- quick search can also find informations in iptc captions, titles, cities ...
- this good old picasa software can also read all these data, and show corresponding photos at lightning speed, wherever they are.

note: XMP method can store keywords in a companion file (= sidecar) for other types of files such as raw, nef, cr2 ...
for more information, use a well known search engine with "sidecar" "xmp" ... keywords
