rating: XnView interface vs XMP metadata

Post by nlab »

I observe some inconsistency that is driving me crazy:

if I rate an image using XnView interface (the star icon), it becomes the color of the star: ie: 5 = purple,
and I can filter the folder by "excellent" and the "starred 5" images are shown.

works as expected

but:
if I rate an image via edit-XMP dropdown, and I choose 5, the purple star does not appear, and the file is not show when filtering by rating.

the problem:
I have a bunch of files rated 5 (in another app), that show the rating when inspecting the XMP metadata, but that do not display the purple-5-star, and can not be sorted/filtered.

You are right, it is difficult to understand.

1) Assigning a star from the browser
This action updates the database (= the catalog)
The stars shown in the browser represents the content of the catalog.
If Tools > Settings > Metadata > "Export rating in xmp metadata" is checked, then the xmp metadata will also be written.
If this option is not set, you won't see rating in "Edit XMP" window, nor in xmp tab in Information pane.

2) Assign a star from "Edit XMP".
The role of this window is to write XMP metadata, but not to update the catalog (unless an "import" option would be enabled)
The stars will therefore not be displayed in the browser.
And the Tools > Settings > Metadata > import XMP rating option doesn't exist : It's a missing feature, I would even say a bug.
To get around it, you have to use View >Update catalog from files on the selected images.
Another ambiguity is that the 'Import Folder' action (Settings>Catalog) is actually able to import the stars (and color labels) from xmp when "Import xmp subject or iptc keyword to catalog's categories" is checked.

Could you send me a file?

No, catalog must be updated with new rating
