RC2: Thumbnail cache

Post by Danny »

Does it even work? It feels like there's no speed difference in viewing a folders content already cached or not. It seems to recreate the thumbs all the time. It becomes most apparent when viewing folders with lots of movie files in them.

edit: Same thing with viewing images. There are those two options called "Read one image ahead" and "Keep current image in cache". They don't seem to work either. There's no difference in image display speed. It takes seconds for 300kB JPGs to load, whereas ACDSee for example only needs a fracture of a second (like 0.3 seconds). I almost can't spin my mousewheel that quick.

Thumb caching works for me. Read ahead and keep current don't work in fullscreen-lite mode otherwise they do.
I have no idea what to suggest, what does your options>cache pannel look like?

In most cases, caching really speeds up things a lot.

But:
A while back I've done some testing and found some problems in caching. Especially if you have large thumbnails (e.g. 200x200 pixel, 300 images per folder), writing and reading the cache can slow down things. Also, if cache was not fully built up (means that all thumbnails in a folder have been created), I had the feeling that caching does not work. Perhaps some people can check this out and verify.

Helmut, I can partially confirm your testings, although we'd need steps to consistently reproduce. *sometimes*, in v1.74, when switching from a cached folder to another cached folder via folder tree, thumbnails were indeed recreated. I haven't yet reproduced in both RC, maybe Pierre did fix it when he improved the cache code to speed startup.

I think i've found the bugs.

Regarding the thumbnails: It doesn't even save thumbnails made from movie files at all!
I tried it on a folder with only movies in them. When browsing it in thumbnail mode it does create thumbnails. But, if i have a look at the cache options, i can see that there are 0 thumbnails being cached for that folder. :bug:

On the other problem: It takes forever to switch from one image to the other in fullscreen view. :bug:
In the normal view mode (the one with menus still showing) it works quickly. But also only in the direction you came from. So it also seems that the "cache behind" function is broken. Possible :bug:

P.S.: What is "fullscreen-lite mode" anyway :?:

I confirm. Also, thumbnails for .wmv aren't even created for me.

read ahead/keep current doesn't seem to work in fullscreen lite mode, It's already been discussed. Another problem being that checking "Dbl-click to view in fullscreen" in options actually enable fullscreen-lite instead of normal fullscreen. middle-clicking will get you back to browser instead of windowed mode with view toolbar, a bit annoying IMO.

this is the full (or expanded) preview mode, basically you'll just get full screen view without viewer capabilities. Honnestly I'm not sure about its usefulness, compared to the real fullscreen.

"Real fullscreen"? Fullscreen to me is exactly this: The image being displayed on the full screen and nothing else (like controls and menus). It's the only view mode i use actually. The other mode isn't really fullscreen. It's what ACDSee calls "view".

Anyway, can i get an official confirmation on the bug with movie thumbnail caching?

Both fullscreen modes display images on the full screen. Lite is supposed to load faster but toolbar is disabled (middle-clicking will get you back to browser instead of windowed viewer).
