RC3: Icon for embedded thumbnail

Post by xnview »

When XnView use embedded thumbnail from JPEG file, perhaps it's better to add an icon for that (like rotation, exif, iptc)
What do you think?

Good !

:) Yes, I guess it should be very useful to know when such a thumbnail exists in a JPEG… However, this requests a symbol which be not language-dependant…
• What about something like this ? Home-made and free…

I agree it may be useful to know whether a pic has an embedded thumbnail or not.
Clo's icon is cool but I'd prefer a text (EMBED?) rather than a graphic, or a black and white one, it'd need to be consistent with the other existing icons, IMHO.

Symbol is better

:) Hi!
- A text is precisely that I would wish to avoid, since many users couln't understand "Embed" or else; indeed, I can, but the whole World don't speak English :P
A symbolic icon could be B & W, but less explicit, though…

[OT] You might set an avatar to complement mine since in the comic strip "Olive" is the wife of my sailor! :D [/OT]

Actually you have the icon [EXIF].

Embedded thumbnails are only possible in an EXIF set.

 So what about [EXIF+] for JPEGs with embedded thumbnails?

Didn't know until now.

The [EXIF] is a bitmap, so in theory anything is possible, there. But I prefered an extra symbol. (Otherwise the auto-rotation symbol could go to [EXIF], too).

Perhaps a small rectangle in a large rectangle would be intuitive. If I find the time I'll make a draft design.

I agree, the icon we need is intuitive and consistent with the current iconset: Image

PS. Yes Clo I might get an Olive avatar :d

Yes, in any case they should be intuitive and consistent!

Most of time I'm using relative small thumbnails and IMO the info icons shouldn't get to big in relation to the thumbnail itself.
Imagine thumbnails with EXIF, IPTC, auto rotation and embedded thumbnails (and what ever more will be possible).

So I like to suggest, that all icons are squared like the actual arrow icons.

[E] - EXIF
- IPTC
[T] - embedded thumbnails

How about a simple dot inside a square?

Thumbnails can also be embedded in the JFXX segment of a JPEG file.

I think too a simple squared "T" (or perhaps "THM" like the file extension for thumbnail files of Canon Cams) would do it best.

So [T], [THM] or square dot?

If you will stay with [EXIF] and [IPTC], then the sqare dot for embedded thumbnails.

If you will change to [E] and , then [T] for embedded thumbnails (that's consistent IMO).

Sample design

Post by helmut »

Below please find a sample what an icon for embedded thumbnail could look like. Eeach of the thumbnails below has a different icon for the embedded thumbnails.

Image

For discussion I propose to use numbers:
1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8

My favourite is 7.

Comments or other sample drafts are welcome.

From these choices, I also vote for 7.

Could you please draw one similar to 7, but with the small rectangle centered? Just to see how it looks.

TIA

Sample 5 is my favourite ...
... because the small thumbnail is not squared (digicam pics are also not squared).
