RC1: Ability to set increased thumnail width & height...
Moderators: helmut, XnTriq, xnview
Open xnview.ini and find "IconHeight=xxx" and "IconWidth=xxx" this is the size of thumbnails and you can put here big value . Start Xnview and you will have big thumbnails. BUT if you open options dialog the new size will be lost.
I agree the big - even huge thumbnails will be good option.
One huge filmstrip without need to open preview window - this will be in help for photografers .

From your posts I can see that in some contexts, large thumbnails can be useful and are needed. Currently, there is two limitations:
a.) User interface limits size
Currently, the options support a maximum of 320x200pixel, only (btw: Why not 320x320?).
The user interface can be changed, but I think the slider control has to be removed, then, since it gets too coarse if the maximum is something like 1024. A simple edit field with spinbuttons should be o.k.
b.) Memory
And there might be a technical limit as Pierre has pointed out in a previous post. Pierre should be able to decide whether there is a limit and what it is. Perhaps you guys can just try out whether it works for you - tboy has written how you can set thumbnail sizes to large values in his post.
What would be interesting to know:
- Did you experience memory problems or GPFs? (perhaps have a look in Taskmanager to see memory usage).
- Which sizes did you set for thumbnails?
- How many thumbnails did you have in your folder?
- What was each image's format, size, and file size?
- On which OS with how much RAM did you make the test?

Thumbnails size is limited to 320 px. Removing this limit will be good option. Imagine one huge filmstrip without need to open preview window.
Will be fine to scroll biggest possible (by monitor limits) pictures. Artists and photographers will like it.
Questions: Is it possible to have different background color and thumbnail size for each folder in the browser window. For example I want big thumbnails in one of my folders to be on Black background and in another to be smaller on White.
I'm user of ThumbsPlus migrating to XnView and I noticed that thumbnails looks a bit better in ThumbsPlus (Sharper ??) I can send you ScreenShots to examine if you want.
Another good option will be a button to open 2 or 3 selected pictures in tiled windows. This is called "View Synchronized" in ThumbsPlus. When 2 files are selected this option is available and two preview windows are displayed together. This is a shortcut to : Open file #1 ; Open file #2 ; Window>Tile Vertically( may be the tabs can have this in RCMenu- if possible to select 2 or more tabs ???)
It's absolutely necessary to make all interface elements detachable and dockable in any position. Menubar,Toolbar and new Tabbar together are taking a lot of space in the top left corner while top right and middle of bars is empty (my monitor is 21in 1600x1200pix). A lot of wasted space.
It will be good for me to have toolbar hidden for browser window but visible in preview window. I think now it's impossible.
TabBar opens a tab for one and the same file each time - So if I click on a file in the browser 10 times I'll have 10 tabs for the same file - Is this correct behavior? I think only one should be open and option like 'OpenAgain orsomething" available.

In RC3 size is corrected to 320x320 pxhelmut wrote:Currently, the options support a maximum of 320x200pixel, only (btw: Why not 320x320?)
Better will be an option button "Allow Extra large thumbnails" and when it is checked sliders deactivated and new edit fields with spin buttons activated (or same old fields with new max value). A warning message for memory usage and slow problems can be integrated too.helmut wrote:The user interface can be changed, but I think the slider control has to be removed, then, since it gets too coarse if the maximum is something like 1024. About memory and picture size: I'll make some tests and post results here, but till now I can say that my computer is slow - Pentium 535MHz ;512MB RAM ; MatroxG400. My files are big (Photoshop 10 to 50MB , above 1200x2000 px 24bit color, ThumbnailSize I use was 1200x600 px) and did not fase any problems or crashes .

Well spotted tboy! It's great and a real boon for quickly previewing photo's/images in high detail.tboy wrote:Open xnview.ini and find "IconHeight=xxx" and "IconWidth=xxx" this is the size of thumbnails and you can put here big value . I have been testing it out setting thumbnails up to 2000x2000 and have experienced no problems so far. For a folder containing 28 high-res images, I had memory usage of 150MB which I don't think is unreasonable when dealing with large thumbnails.
I would also like an option to scale up images which are smaller than the thumbnail size (I don't really think it should scale up icons, although if this could also be made an option, that would be nice).
NOTE: I thought XnView 1.74 supported scaling up of images, but that seems to have been removed with 1.8
Yes, as long as the image is already 2000 pixels. If the image is only 1600 pixels then the thumbnail border will be 2000 pixels, and the images will be centred in this (ie. for 1600 pixels, there will be 200 pixel gap on left, right, top, bottom of image)tboy wrote:Can you see full 2000px image on your monitor ???Anonymous wrote:I have been testing it out setting thumbnails up to 2000x2000
I know, but having it scaled up can be helpful sometimes when you want to zoom in on an area. By having it as an option though, you get the choice to enable/disable when required. Since images are already scaled down when they are too big, then it should be simple to change it so that small images can be scaled up.tboy wrote:Scaling Up will produce nothing more than zoomed pixelated image ......
BTW, does anyone know what algorithm is currently used for scaling thumbnail images (Simple, Bilinear, Bicubic etc.)
Still no problems to report when using large/huge thumbnails (2000x2000 and 1200x1200) in XnView.
Please can you add the ability to set thumbnails of this size to the Options dialog (for RC5 maybe?). An option to scale up images which are smaller than thumbnail size would also be appreciated. As mentioned previously, I don't really think it should scale up icons, although if this could also be made an option, that would be nice.

Still had no problems from using huge thumbnails in XnView 1.8.
Please can you allow huge thumbnails to be set in the Options dialog, instead of limiting thumbnails to 320x320. This would be easy to "fix" since no new code is needed, just the max thumbnail size numbers need to be increased.
Pierre - Please can you add support for this to XnView 1.8
