Hi again,
In this Settings window here.,.
..I suggest that the 'Thumbnail' be no longer a tickbox option but rather a one-or-the-other choice option between a new proposed feature option simply named 'File associated icon'.
This 'File associated icon' would simply use the file icon of the file from the system OS rather than a tab image preview, especially since a tab image preview can begin to look ever so ridiculous for large dimension images. Really an image/picture preview on the tab is not to my taste but an option between something else while still keeping the existing option to keep nothing on the tab would be great.
So I made this, to show what the new options would look like;
So there are 3 options 'Nothing', 'Thumbnail', 'File associated icon'
'Nothing' should be better named to 'Plain' or 'Blank'
When 'File associated icon' is enabled then the tabs would simply use the icon of the file that is designated by the system OS (which is usually the highest quality 16x16 or otherwise nearest 16x16). I made this mock up on Win XP:
This feature should work cross-platform - Windows, Mac and maybe Linux sytems too.

Re: 0.32 Request: File associated icon option on tabs
Other possible names could be 'System's icon' or just 'File's icon' especially when considering that XnView MP is cross-platform and Linux and Mac OSX don't do file associations in the way that Windows does them.
-EDIT-
yes, File's icon would be a better accurate name since not every file on a user's system has a file association (Windows) and also the name 'File's icon' matches the name that is found in XnView Shell Extension.

Re: 0.32 Request: File associated icon option on tabs
Thank you cranuterj,
I like the drop-down selection box too myself
It just occurred to me that I never made a rationale for having this feature in XnView MP.
Right, ok, my rationale for this feature is:
A.) XnView MP supports viewing other files in the viewer (non-image files) like PDF, Text files etc and therefore 'thumbnail' on tab becomes inappropriate in these cases or just plainly useless
B.) 16x16 File Icon's from the system is faster to fetch from the system and therefore less memory strain on users systems (e.g. if an image file is at a super-high resolution and thumb on tab could drain resources).
C.) XnView MP is already able to quickly display 16x16 file icon's from the system in the "Recent Files" menu ...so therefor this file-icon-on-tab feature would be a copy of that same code.
------------------------------
A Better Idea for everything:
Or how about Pierre could remove that 'close button' tickbox and just put Everything into one single drop-down menu This one single drop-down menu would consist of the following user choices:
-Nothing
-Close button
-Thumbnail
-Thumbnail + Close button
-File's icon
-File's icon + Close button
------------------------------

Re: 0.32 Request: File associated icon option on tabs
blister,
thank you for your support and feedback.
This is my Final (very last mock-up) of how it should look:
..So I decided it would be best to keep "close button" as a tickbox so not to confuse users and then in the drop-down button have added;
Display: ---> displays nothing!
Display: Thumbnail ---> displays Thumbnail on tab
Display: File icon ---> displays 16x16 file-type icon on tab /like in the 'recent files' menu
thank you for your support and feedback.

Re: 0.32 Request: File associated icon option on tabs
Bonjour budz45,
Hello budz45,
Thank you, but your work is excellent as well.
I thought your first thought was more appropriate given that there is enough space to not use a drop!
My first proposal would identify the same image in different formats but would increase the "Bookmark" and may be technically too difficult to implement!
NB: I think the "header" is not quite accurate. I believe the correct term in French is "Bookmark" to define the projecting part of a tab.

Re: 0.32 Request: File associated icon option on tabs
I further suggest for 'Files Icon' on tab feature:
There should be special case for ICNS and RSRC icon files in where these Mac icon files must display highest 16x16 page on tabs - since they are not natively supported on Windows -:)
