I'd think the most useful and intuitive place to dump them would be the folder they were generated from and open them in notepad. After all, how many people actually browse their profiles looking for files if they close the notepad?

:) Hello !

• I tested again in ß-6, no real progress about the location and the saving of the “listing.txt” file¦s :|

Test # 1 : Path —> E:\Documents and Settings\CLAUDE\Local Settings\Temp\listing.txt - 5 entries in the listing
- I keep XnView open

Test # 2 Same path, 10 entries in the listing, the previous file is overwritten without any confirmation still.

Close XnView.

Test # 3 Same path, 15 entries in the listing, same mess…

• Regardless this crappy location, we could have at least a numbered naming for successive created files,
like Olivier_G suggested.

On Windows 98 and Win NT 3.5 the directory for temporary files was something like C:\Windows\Temp. On Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the directory for temporary files is <user dir>\Local Settings\Temp. You will find all your temporary files, there. XnView just makes use of standards which is good, nothing to complain about from my point of view.

A file listing is nothing very valuable, especially if it is stored in a temporary folder. So I think it's o.k. that XnView overwrites it whenever needed. Those users who want to use the filelisting further can save it to a place they want.

But this file is the output of the Action 'Create File listing'.
It would be a bit like storing the webpage output in a temporary folder and asking the user to copy/paste the source code elsewhere. I think the logic to consider the output of a 'Create' action as a temporary file is wrong, IMHO, even if this action is not essential.

• I agree 1,000 times ! The product of a “Create” action is not a disposable nappy…
- Like I said already, I guess that a fixed honest location like the current prgramme-folder (or a user-chosen one, saved and reused always) might be better and logical.

- I need often to get several listings, and even to save a single file name, but I'm bound to use the Listing, since copy (a) file-name¦s into the Clipboard is not supported (I requested it, though… Unanswered from Pierre). :|

I understand your arguments. But when talking about solution consider that some people (including me) generate file listings just to copy the contents into Word or Excel, for example. For those users the temporary nature must maintained - they should not be forced to delete superfluous file listings regularly or input file names.

To achieve this the output folder could be editable with temporary folder and current folder as chooseable presets. Also the filename might be changeable.

This still needs to be discussed. --> Info & Feedback

Should we move this to 'bug reports' or 'suggestions'? I never could get list to appear in wrong folder.

Still anywhere

:) Hi B. !

• I retested on this moment with 1.90.x (test) and I got the listing as :
E:\Documents and Settings\CLAUDE\Local Settings\Temp\listing.txt
• Strange, since I would rather expect it in the XvView USER folder… as :
E:\Documents and Settings\CLAUDE\Application Data\XnView\
…at the very outside ! Indeed, better in the XnView folder if possible !
• So, please do the best you think… :D
