I don't think so, I tried to rebuild thumbs, restart xnview...

Doh! Dreamer's example confirmed with write>jpg 'rebuild thumb' setting on or off.
It's a lossless operation, so that option shouldn't be important.

And 'rebuild EXIF thumbnail' works?
OK, no problem, but it's all JPEG pictures...

If you mean 'Recreate EXIF thumbnail' in menu > edit > metadata, then yes, it works good, always. Context menu "Rebuild thumbnails" in browser doesn't work.

How else to preserve original thumbnail?

When using lossless operations, then it should be always preserved IMO. That option is only for lossy operations.

Sorry guys, I've to check back as I guess there's a misunderstanding. Do you really want to keep the original thumbnail even if lossless crop removes 95% of the image, so it is massively lossy but just does not re-encode the image data?? IMHO, the thumb is a small preview of the image, and if the image is changed (newly re-coded image data / lossy or not does not matter) I want the thumb to be updated so it shows the new state of the image. Elsewise I would not be able to distinguish several images in browser mode that are derived from one single image e.g. by cropping differently.

I fully agree that lossless operations like metadata editing / creating (=image is not changed) is no need for thumb re-creation.

Kind regards, Georg

I am sorry, yes, it was a misunderstanding. I wanted to say the "thumbnail should be always retained (not removed) when using lossless operations", but it should be changed, of course. I wanted to say, that option is only for lossy operations, not lossless.
