Thinking about this more and reading the above comments I really think that the gender is not really needed, here. The XnView Forum is not a single or flirt site, so I really think that here a "gender indicator" is pretty superflous.

Add male, female, and "other" genders to the site. The symbol for the "other" gender can be the one prince changed his name to. You could also add a plain circle for "none", and a question mark for "damned if I know".

those symbols and others are now part of unicode. I'm curious about which ones can be seen on various OS (just to add some chrome).
Ex:
♔♕ (U+2654 and U+2655)...chess; king and queen
