Getting no thumbnail is certainly an issue. However different than mine in this thread. The issue here is not getting a thumbnail at all.
The issue is that in single thumbnail mode, XnviewP creates a single thumbnail as it should. It does so for any seek position (percentage) I have set in setting.
But in 4 thumbnail mode although cappable, XnviewMP does not create 4 thumbnails.
If it can produce a thumbnail for any seek position, then it should be able to produce 4 thumbnails as well.

Check out these linkt to download:

I have doubled checked again with new version. It seems that XnviewMP has issues jumping to all positions in single thumb mode. Which would be consistant with what you have said so far.
However still these videos are not corrupted or anything and they play perfectly in any player. So if there is an issue with seeking the correct position, why do these videos play perfectly, why can any player jump to any position of the videos and only XnviewMP can not?
This is what I don't understand. If a video does not play in Windows Media Player or Classic Player no wonder XnviewMP cannot play it. But if it plays in any other player without issue why XnViewMP cannot jump to correct positions ot produce thumbnails.

Any format. It does not matter which one you choose to download.

Then maybe it is time to use something else?
I mentioned already the thumbnailer Icaros which has NONE of these issues with the files.
Try it for yourself. Download it:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/icaros.html
Add required extensions for the files that you have downloaded from the links and set offset to 99 percent.
Icaros will display the correct thumbnail for ANY video position that obviously XnviewMP can't. Icaros is using ffmpeg and I see no reason why XnviewMP could not use ffmpeg as well.
So either there should be a way to make the win32 directx api work. Or if this is not possible because it lacks functionality then ffmpeg should do the thumbnailing.

ok, if ffmpeg is installed, i'll use it. Currently if you have ffmpeg, same frame is extracted...

Maybe we can have a setting to choose which thumbnailer to use and put ffmpeg.exe into a utils folder in application directory and then in can be used by the portable version as well.

Is this issue supposed to be resolved?
XnviewMP has still issues creating 4 thumbnails. This is weird because thumbnailer Icaros
http://www.videohelp.com/software/Icaros does not seem to have these kind of seek problems.
So I am still waiting for this issue to be resolved as this feature is not working.
Could you please resolve this as it is terribly annoying.

So by accident I have found out that for using ffmpeg to build thumbnails, you have to put it into the Addon folder.
Either I missed the anouncenment for that or there never was an anouncement for that change.
Now with that change done it is working much better than the previous built in version. 4 thumbnails that were not generated before are now being generated.
So I am asking myself why this it not the default method. There should be some function to download ffmpeg.exe and put it into the correct folder automatically and to start generating correct thumbnails with 1 click.
