yes but CTRL is used to select all children (same as setting>Metadata>auto apply parent keywords
So instead of CTRL what can i use?

Ctrl is for multi-selection and must not be used for selecting all children. The selection of children is discussed in the suggestion that m.Th. posted:

This problem is supposed to be fixed in
XnView MP 0.85 beta 1. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

Fixed, but when selecting a category with children the children aren't selected at all now...That's fine as long as that's how it's supposed to work, and I think it makes sense, but I haven't used categories, so I'm not sure. But my understanding is that before they were selected, which is why when they didn't unselect it was a problem, so it seems the overall behavior changed.

Yeah, I was part of that conversation, just wasn't sure if a final decision had been made on it and if so if that was implemented here. Just wanted to point out the apparent change in behavior with the fix to make sure it's working as intended.
