This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.6.1. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

While you have Xnview MP 1.6.1 open with the folder containing videos in it, go to your file explorer and copy a video in that folder, this will cause Xnview MP 1.6.1 to crash. Warning: the crash will occur every time you launch the application from this point on, you will need to downgrade to get it working again.
Preview playback now works better than before, but not as well as it used to be. You have to move backwards or forwards a little on the seek bar to get playback to work.

I'll gladly send you test files that crash the application (I'm on Windows 11 64 bit).
The zip contains 2 files: "Rat Race" which causes a crash when rebuilding the thumbnails, it is still possible to open the folder in XnView MP 1.6.1 that contains the file, and XnView MP 1.6.1 also does NOT crash when this file is copied to the folder while browsing this folder in XnView MP 1.6.1.
The other file, "Zelda Music", seems to be more problematic: The application crashes when the folder containing the file is opened or when the file is copied to the folder currently open in the XnView 1.6.1 browser.

Hi, I can confirm that the crashes are fixed in version 1.6.2.
Great job, also on playback, it is no longer necessary to fast forward / rewind to play the video in the preview panel.
