I can reproduce this in Windows 11 Pro 22H2 as follows:
  1. Open an image.
  2. Go back into the browser by clicking the browser icon in the Toolbar or the browser tab.
  3. Open another image.
  4. Again, go back into the browser.
  5. Open a third image.
  6. Now press ESC and you should see the second image.
  7. Press ESC again and you should see the first opened image.
  8. Pressing ESC for the third time should bring you back into the browser.
You should see what happens when enabling to show the tabs.

Is this what you mean?
I have the latest version 1.3.1 installed now, so I don't know if anything has changed.

Yes, I can reproduce these steps. But I'm not sure anymore if this was exactly what I had in mind originally...

Let me put it another way. When I open an image via Windows Explorer and then press ESC, I expect XnViewMP to close, regardless of what I did before. I have a feeling that the old version of XnView worked like this. When XnViewMP doesn't close, it's confusing to me, illogical. Maybe there are other situations where it makes sense, I don't know, but it's confusing to me in my usage...

This I can reproduce. When opening an image in Windows Explorer and hitting ESC, I'm in the XnView browser and the folder and all images are shown, from which I opened the image before.

While writing this post, I found a solution for that behavior! Now opening an image in Windows Explorer, the image opens. Hitting ESC now quits XnView completely! 8)

Here you will find the setting, that you have to change:
Settings | Interface | Keyboard | Pressing ESC once quits XnView MP
Change this setting to "Always" or "Only in fullscreen". Last option is what I choose.

Maybe this is what you are looking for?

I have it set up (from the beginning)... The option "Only in fullscreen". Still, the problem sometimes persists.

The problem is when I open XnViewMP in browser mode (not fullscreen, the file tree tab is visible) and then close it by default (Alt+F4, close button). The application remembers the last selection and when I later open the application in fullscreen mode and press ESC, instead of closing the application it stays open.

I think fullscreen mode should just not remember previous open files (probably). Or just close on ESC, whatever is there. Maybe I'm overlooked something out, some situations, context, maybe there's a reason, but when it doesn't close on ESC it's uncomfortable for me, the application control.

What was it set to? For me, it was set to "Ask". I switched to never.

Previously I had the "Always" option set, now I switched to the "Never" option.

Okay. That makes sense. Hope it works for you now, as you want it to work. :)
