I think you understand what I am saying correctly. The thing that stands out to me is that the files already have IPTC and XMP fields and data present before being edited in XnView. So, that data could have been written with some other software, or in camera? If this is the case then perhaps it is written in a way that XnView cannot read. I am only speculating about this as I am not a programmer nor an expert on ExifTool. Could there possibly be OS introduced incompatibilities, or different character sets and encoding issues? Hopefully you can get to the bottom of this issue.

None of the files that I originally uploaded for testing had any metadata other that produced in camera OR written by xnv. I did not use other software to add any IPTC-XMP data. There seems to be general agreement that XNV IS writing data into the raw files' internal exif, but it is only visible in the XNV Exiftool panel, and not elsewhere.

Without being a programmer, I think it makes sense that if the added metadata only lives in the exif portion of the raw file, that it might not appear elsewhere. Writing an XMP side car would (I think) be the normal process, which at least in my experience is not happening.

Perhaps Pierre or others at the developer level will eventually resolve this to add the normal functionality, but I am mostly unable to use the product for my cataloging / metadata needs when my primary cameras are Fuji and I exclusively capture in raw (RAF).
