Version 1.9.2 is affected too.
However I have noticed that setting 'File list' -> 'Scan file headers' from "Always" to "Never" seems to workaround the problem (i.e. XnView is no longer dropping images).
Maybe you can reproduce the problem by setting it to "Always"?
I also tried to analyze the situation with SysInternals Process Monitor, but couldn't find anything extraordinary or conclusive. The only thing standing out to me from that is that XnView seems to read files in 512b or 4096b chunks which just isn't optimal.
