to view AI files in the field

Our group has turned to Adobe Acrobat Reader.

And... we are seriously considering converting everything to Canvas so we can use ACDsee and get out of the Adobe monopoly that won't let you view your own work.

Bridge just doesn't cut it.

take a look at Konvertor, it can read those AI

If konvertor can read it, so xnview can too

I personally like it does not generate thumbnails, because it may slow down so much.

You can rename an .ai file to .pdf and open with your pdf reader of choice. Eg: foxit reader.

You are right, but actaully, you can do it without renaming. All modern .ai-files are readable in PDF-readers, only old ones can not. Not sure with which version this was added.
