You are right! By disabling this option, XnView does not crash anymore on my PC... I suppose this will help you to solve the problem in further releases.
In your folder do you have only pictures?
I have tested both cases... A folder containing only Jpeg Files, a folder containing also the "thumbs.db" file and another folder with the "desktop.ini" file. Every time XnView crashes.

So you have Xp, if you enable Option/View/File list/Cache, and if you click on a file in windows explorer, you have always a crash (even if you have only jpg files in folder). Right?
Do you have the problem with old 1.80?

I have Windows XP SP2 with all the latest updates.
Version 1.82.4: If I enable 'Read one image ahead' in the Option/View/File list/Cache, XnView crashes 9 times of 10 when I open a file by double clicking it from within Explorer or Total Commander. I have tried this with a folder containing only jpg files. I have even deleted the thumbs.db file to make a test. I have made the same test with a folder containing other files, and the result is the same.
The crash
only happens after I open a file with a double-click from within Explorer or Total Commander. From within the XnView browser I do not have any problem.
Version 1.82.2: XnView
never crashes. I have tried both options (enable or disable) from Option/View/File list/Cache/Read one image ahead. I have tried with folders containing only jpg files and also folders with other files (ex.: thumbs.db, desktop.ini).

Jean-Claude
Version 1.80.3

I have also downloaded version 1.80.3 from the link you have provided earlier. This version works fine too, like 1.80.2.
The problem is definitively new in 1.80.4.

Downgrading to 1.80.3 fixed the issue for me also. Something in the newest version just doesn't work on my PC.

Just add me to the list of people having the same problem.
I did some other tests and it is definitly the option "Read one image ahead". If this option is enabled, xnview crashes everytime I open an image from outside xnview. It does not crash when doublecklicking an image in browse-mode. Additionally the program does not crash, if the image is the last file alphabetically in a folder (exception: "Loop on the file list" makes it crash again).
I know, this windows-error-messages are quite useless to debug a program, but nevertheless the message is (my Windows is german):
Die Anweisung in "0x00554a5f" verweist auf Speicher "0x00000004". Der Vorgang "read" konnte nicht auf dem Speicher durchgeführt werden.
btw: still have Windows XPSP1 installed

I forgot: the xnview version is 1.82.4

Say, someone of you got Daemon-Tools installed?
Had the same problem after installing v4 and it was gone after uninstalling them (if you try, be sure to remove sptd.sys manually as the uninstaller doesn't).

I don't have Daemon-Tools installed on mine.
I noticed another weird thing. When I was trying to debug this using regmon it never crashed. Turned off debugging and it crashes almost everytime. Makes it kinda hard to debug!
Daemon Tools

Disabling that option makes no difference for me. Neither Version 1.82.3 or 1.82.4 (on Win XP)!
I guess it happens in folders I have only pictures and folders with also movie files or so.

The 2nd. Sometimes it crashes when I browse through pictures in XnView. But sometimes not. ... When I try to reproduce the crash, it works fine!
