thanks pierre, i really appreciate your dilligent help with this. its now obvious after checking all of xnviews settings that its something on my computer that is dragging this particular program down. i will check an older version out. im not sure which versions i have stored on my backup cd. maybe version 1.19 which i think is one of the first i started using. your support and product is the best bar none.

pierre, thanks big time for the link to all of your older versions. i have found that version 1.31 gives the best response on my computer. nice and fastlike i am used to. it appears that subsequent versions have a definant lag time as the versions get newer. is it ok to have multiple versions on the computer (1.31 - 1.60 - 1.80 - 1.90 beta)? i have the "ini" of xnview stored in the windows.

with the lag i have been experiencing, i was affraid i could not use this viewer. i miss not having tabs in this earlier version but i can deal with that. thanks again. dan...

i supposed i should have let this thread die pierre, but as a long time supporter and user of xnview i felt compelled to update you on this lag problem i was having with all releases after version 1.31. i have been installing versions on my slave drive (which also happens to be the fastest in terms of speed). but none the less, this was my problem with the program opening very slowly. i installed v 1.82 on my root drive (c:) and there is no sign of the lag problem i have been experiencing. i have tried placing the "virtual memory" on either drive, but did not help any so that is not the problem. this to say the least is a big relief to me. i will attempt to figure out why the program had such difficulty on my slave drive and update this post accordianly, providing there is any usefull information to share. thank you again for this excellent program, and your ongoing support of it. dan...

Older XnView versions (before 1.82, I think) had the problem that the .ini files had been read and written many, many times during startup and exit. Especially on slow(er) devices like USB sticks this caused real problems.

In all those cases switching to Windows registry as storage for the settings helped. Could you please try that? Simply activate "Use registry to save options" in "Tools > Options > Install".

yes i had tried that (registry ini.) when the program was on my slave drive. i even went and completly uninstalled it from the slave, removed registry value, defragmented the drive then reinstalled xnview on the slave. checked the option to write the ini to registry, but still had substantial lag in all operations of all versions after 1.31. now that i installed onto the master hard drive problem is now corrected. dan...

I had the same problem as you, Dan. I have a folder with more than 4000 archives of all types, and when I opened a image from XnView browser, it took 20 seconds to open. Then I changed the browser to only show images and now don't lag anymore.

not able to use any version of xnview after v1.31 due to the very long time it takes to open and disply images. after reformatting my root drive, i deceided to reinstall xnview 1.91. thinking this would surely fix my lag problem, but it did not. i sure wish i knew what was wrong with my computer to not be able to use this program. having been on and supported xnview since version 1.19 and used dozens and dozens of other viewers with none of them coming close to the functions or ability of xnview. the closest would be irfan view, but not having tabs or built in preview screen keeps it off my computer. i like version 1.31, but thumbnail are not clear and i cant make or rename folders within this version. this is on a 2.0ghz hp computer running 1 gb of ram. i also once again applied all of the previous posted suggestions. is there a "xnview ini" with version 1.31???

Perhaps Pierre can provide a "Debug" version of XnView which writes a trace log with time stamps. This would allow for tracking down the problem easily, I think.

yea how cool would that be. i have a slave drive in which i keep all my programs and images etc... after formatting the root drive (c) i only placed xnview on the master drive along with system files to see if that would help, but did not. i have also tried the slave but samr results. ohhh the agony...

First of all, thanks for this great program!
My problem is similar, but not exactly the same: when I click on an image file it opens up quickly in full screen mode, no lags! But if I try to walk the directory up/down (via Prev/Next key) my system just freezes with XNview taking 89/100% of CPU time, but not disk trashing.

If I leave the program "working" it will finish it's work (after a minute or so) and show me the next/Prev image and from then on, not a single problem.

The behavior explained above only happens in directories with hundreds of images or with directories with big images (6-10 MB each).

I'm using 1.82.4, no cahe activated, no read forward option, configured to open image in full screen.

I've got used to this, but I think this didn't happen in previous versions (can't remember which)...

No I didn't, I've done it right now and the answer is YES! It works really fast, not a simple lag.
