Yes John, your dialog box is better for me (because only one mouse clic in both cases and less confusing) but by default "remember this choice and don't ask again" must be unchecked.
Of course for rename, but also for delete & move too, it' s too dangerous for me to have this choise (selected or tagged files) then the selected choice is better in this case.

Well, I used the new dialog box (similar in appearance to my proposal above and identical in behavior) TWICE before I even noticed.
Perfect! That's how a computer interface is supposed to work.
Thank you Pierre.

There is a little problem. So what is the correct behaviour?
n file selected, 0 file tagged => Open with selected
0 file selected, n files tagged => Open with tagged
1 file selected, n files tagged => ??
n files selected, n files tagged => dialog

Logically...
1 file selected, n files tagged
...is just a special subcase of:
n files selected, n files tagged
Therefore:
(since there are selections AND tags)
Show dialog!

Same for me !
n files selected, n files tagged => then dialog
1 file selected, n files tagged => then dialog too

I think different dialogs for different tag operations is overkill. The problem would be remembering which settings are for different tag operations?! Sure, they don't have to be used...

I'm hoping the consensus is for one (1) dialog for all circumstances where XnView can't figure out what to do (ie: whether to operate on the selection or on the tags).

Perhaps we agree. Currently, it is possible to set different default actions for 'Create strip of images' and 'Batch convert' by using the "[x]Don't show" element.
I cannot think of any circumstance where someone would want to have different actions (an especially recall these differences days later after revisiting program).

How that?? You means a setting per operation for this dialog?

Yes, would it be better for only 1 setting (tag vs. selected) collectively for all 'safe' actions (convert, panorama)?
It is the possibility of opposite settings for each action dialog which seems troublesome to me. More chances for needing to reset following:
[Start]
TagShowAgain=

No, I think, one setting option dialog per operations, is not very useful, too complicated and confusing.
For me this dialog is good enought like it is in the version 1.93.4.
And not really easy to do for Pierre and to track (without bugs) for the futures versions of Xnview ?

I need the option to disable dialog for any operation (also copy/move/delete) - always use "tagged" files if any file is tagged. This is necessary to quicky tag and copy/move/delete the files from many folders.
Don't know if one or two options would be better, or another ini option, but a single option would be clearer IMO (I thought it's a bug).
Perhaps at least - always use tagged files if just one file is selected.
