I also support the use of text files instead of dll. I hope this suggestion will find its way not too far away... :D ...hopefully before 2.0...

Yes. This matter looks like a minor one, but in fact it's important for various reasons. Currently, translation is a pain in the a@@ for all the translators. And furthermore each DLL is about 160 kByte in size which blows up the full package a lot (about 1.5 - 2 MB). Time for a change...

HOOOO..... Yheaaaaaaaaa !

:) Good morning !

…each DLL is about 160 kByte …
• Currently for 1.90 A3, the French one (normal font Tahoma 8 ) is 204 kiB, while strangely, the other experimental corrected version - with a narrow font - is 208 kiB…

• Yes 1,000 times, the time has come to change… while I'm still alive ! :P

Templates are made

:) Hello !

• In order to save time for Pierre and to speed up the first tries (after 1.90),
I just sent a set of "usable" language-files to our Dear Author…

- I could make a single menu *.MNU text file, and a single language one *.LNG too…

- There are French and English (UK) templates, based on the last 1.90 ß-6 indeed,
but this is sufficient to start such a work, I guess…
- I spent a fortnight at this, and Paul “Ouistiti” Friend helped too a lot for debugging and suggestions…

- All IDs are in decimal, and I hope strongly this'll be used, because other numberings¦marking off are masts in the b**
and not attractive at all for potential new translators (missing languages).

I just translated .RC's to polish and I don't know if txt's are such a good idea. Not in all strings but there were some where too big and there was additional work to fit those in dialogs.

If there will be txt files no such fitting operation could be done.
Only cutting text and making weird abbreviations.

Mayby there is another way to solve this problem?
I think at this time English DLL extracted from XnView.exe in the package should do the trick.

If it must be txt file space for strings should be at least little bit bigger.

TEXT IS GREAT !

• I translate strings as texts for years in several known programmes like Total Commander,
and this is indeed the BEST way to get nice translations !

- The Authors have to set controls sufficiently wide to receive the strings in all supported languages,
it's the author's business !
- Generally, the French strings are often the longest ones, and all fits in the programmes I translate
- with the help of Ouistiti¦Paul-friend now…
- When the interface font can be customized, there are other possibilities to make that all fits, this is possible with text-files and not with DLLs like XnView uses still…

- Using outdated DLLs means that Pierre has a huge charge of work in excess,
and this is a mast in the b** to change anything and to update !
- When he's doing that, he doesn't work for the programme improvements, bug fixes and new features…

• This has been largely discussed a long while ago in THIS SAME THREAD,
all “Pros ” and “Cons” have been expressed, and Pierre chose…

I totally agree that txt is the best way for translation but like you mentioned "The Authors have to set controls sufficiently wide"!

Luckly there are only few applications with this issue.

To be clear: I vote for txt too, but with enough space for translated texts in program.

:) Hello !

• Thank you to support, Karl !
- Like helmut says above, that's an important improvement finally, able to free a lot of precious time for Pierre.
- I guess that the DLLs are stones in his shoe preventing him to run…
