Image baskets are just categories with a few additional features. A new category type in the category tree would suffice for that.
Also, though a separate Browser panel to display the members of a persistent selection (such as an image basket or a category) would be
nice, it wouldn't address the issues associated with Helmut's original posts.
The options are:
- 1. Put Browser functionality into the dialogs (Compare, Batch, Slide Show definition, etc.).
or
2. Put the dialog functionality into the Browser, perhaps directly into the Preview and/or Properties panel.
I prefer the latter option. It re-uses the Browser functionality (which has already been created) and removes the "modality" of the dialogs. Implementation might require rethinking the GUI for the Preview and Properties (etc) panels to incorporate the new functionality, but could involve a plug-in architecture and API for easy expansion of future capabilities.

No, not as a new category (even if it's almost the same thing as tag). The image basket will be a separate pane with thumb view, easy to add or remove files.

Why? If we have a persistent selection, no need to add 'file list' in dialog...

How to put dialog in preview panel??
I think that this solution will be too complicated...

I also tend to think that a "Basket" could be a kind of category... and that it should be easy to add or remove files.
There are discussions to add another file view (or manage several instances) => you would just open a second view and drag&drop files from your folder to any categorie (or between categories, folders...).
A bit more thinking is probably needed to provide a good solution.

An "image basket" is for me more than a category, it's a little thumbview where you have your files, you can drag&drop, remove, reorder them..
Many software use an "image basket" so i think that it's a good idea

Not so easy than an image basket pane

Yes, why not, but to be sure, by your 'easier" way, the files list from the images basket pane must be stored into the data base (.db like tag, categories) or texte files (.txt .csv like files listing), .ini (like favorite list), .sld (like slide show list), ... or else by an other way ???
Like the Helmut tittle said :
"Unified way for creating file list", XnView must also harmonize (standardize) the way to create files listing, and for me the best way is into the .db (and/or also as text files option - if user customization).

Yes, this list will be stored in db

I think another pane would be more flexible and perhaps even easier to implement - as you said "it's almost the same thing as tag" - I think it's the same, just the "tag / basket" pane is invisible now. Perhaps you could just add the option (button/kb shortcut) to toggle visibility of the basket/tag pane with the tagged files list, then no additional feature is needed. Later you could add options to change view - and to change the path of the second pane - so that not just tag/basket, but also other categories, or comp. path (C:, D: ...) will be available.
IMHO image basket IS (would be) just another pane with limited functionality (single feature, files must be dragged there, but there are many keyboard shortcuts for tag, why not use these?) but it might be much more complex.
You could still add "image basket" button/shortcut to always open/close the second pane with image basket, so it will be working exactly the same as in other programs, but it won't be so limited.
