Edit IPTC data: Keywordlists
Posted: Tue Jan 02, 2007 11:05 am
I've just found out that editing IPTC data allows for using predefined keywords, now. (Edit > Metadata > Edit IPTC data... > keywords).
This new functionality is certainly good, but I find the usage *very* unclear (at the moment I'm still unclear how the keyword text files are supposed to work). Below please find various things I critizise and I do not understand.
- <Defined keyword list>
What is the "defined keyword list"? Is this the "Default keyword list"? When adding words to the <defined keyword list> and then closing the dialog, the keywords will not appear when reopening the dialog.
- Text file?
What is the text file for? Is there a better - clearer naming for it? Does the text file contain one word list or many word lists? Why is the text file not automatically loaded when opening the IPTC dialog the next time.?
- Default text file
As written before I'm not clear what the text files are for. And how must those textfiles be structured? Can I add words to the text file? How do I save the text file?
- Button "Open text file"
There is "Open text file" for opening a text file. "Text file" is just a type of data, I think it would be better to describe what the text file contains. E.G. "Open wordlist" would be clearer. And for opening we have a symbol "..." - haven't we?
- Filetype IPTC?
When opening a keyword list, the Open dialog shows "IPTC" as filetype. Is this correct? Shouldn't this be something like "IPTC Keyword list (*.txt)"?
- "Add to list auto"
What is "Add to list auto" for? Is this for making things more convenient? Does this checkbox really make sense: After activating this checkbox I can no longer use the cursor keys (up/down) to select an entry in the drop down list.
As you can see in my questions I don't understand this keyword stuff at all. This is an indicator for me that this is too complicated and not well designed. Do other people have the same problems/questions?
Perhaps someone can answer my questions. Once we have understood how this is supposed to work we can find ways to improve this.
