XnView Software

When I load (using "open with") an image displayed in the XNView browser with Nikon Capture NX and then work on the file and attempt to save it, an NX save error is produced.

The only way I can avoid the error is to switch to XNview and display a different folder. This action seems to "release" the file so it can be over-written.

This happens with NEF files straight from the camera but not every time (seems to be in bouts). So far I can't report whether it happens with other formats.

The text of the error is as follows:
"Could not save file. Access to file denied"

Otherwise XNView and Capture NX work very well together.

Thanks for your efforts in producing a very useful programme. It's part of my regular work flow.

Strange, do you have the problem with jpeg too?

Since the original post I have not been able to cause the error with jpeg files. Interestingly the last time the error happened (also since original post) I have had to completely exit XNView (not just change folder) before I could save the NEF.

And the nef is loaded in the preview when you use 'open with'??

Yes it does display in the preview. And when I double-click on a NEF it displays in the XNView viewer no problem (presumably it displays the embedded jpeg).

Interestingly the browser doesn't display thumbnails of NEF files if they have been saved by Nikopn Capture NX (NEFs straight from camera have thumbnails).

I've tried with 'open with' and an application, and can delete it without problem... Strange behaviour...

Further to the above postings. As a test I repeatedly used Nikon View as the server programme (instead of XNView) for Nikon Capture NX and saved NEF files. There was never any errors. Switch back to using XNView and the problem re-occurrs.

Unfortunately I don't have another programe the will load and save NEF files. I have served jpg files to a programme that saves them and no problem.

The NEF files saved by Capture NX are different in some way to those produced by the camera. Hence XNView can not produce thumbnails and only displays a small jpeg (I think) of the NEF image. Another programme that I have which reads NEF is UFRaw. It uses DCRAW (v8.41) to read NEFs. This programme reads the camera NEFs but not Capture NX NEFs.

The problem continued to occur up to and including v1.90. With the installation of 1.90.1 it has been solved (after testing on two different PCs).
